EXAM STRESS

1. Symptoms of exam stress

According to Professor Turnbull, a neurologist, more than 25% of America teenagers feel stressed at least once a day. And nothing gets students down than exams. Nearly 90% of teenagers suffer from stress at least once. “They come down with migraines, and many have problems eating and sleeping.”

2. Extra stress

Fear of failing exams is understandable. However, pressure from parents and teachers adds to the stress. “My parents expect me to be good at everything – academic subject, sport, and music! It’s ridiculous,” says Macy, 16, from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

3. Prepare your environment

“You should make a revision plan that is realistic and that gives you enough time to study,” recommends Prof Turnbull. “Students should eat healthy meals – oily fish and green vegetables contain chemicals that help you memory. The revision environment is important. Student ought to find a quiet place to revise. They mustn’t leave things on their desk that can distract them, such as a cell phone. And they should see their friends just a few times a week – and if possible, no testing and no emails.

4. How to revise

“Make a list before you start revising each day. Study the most difficult things early in the day, when your memory is fresher. After you have finished revising, check the list – and then rest. Exam stress wears off when you read a magazine, listen to music, or do sports.”

5. On the big day

“If you start to feel nervous, breathe deeply for a minute. Then skim all the exam questions. Read all the instruction carefully. How many questions do you have to answer? Are there any sections that you don’t have to answer? Be prepared – then you won’t get any nasty surprises halfway through the exam.”

6. When it is all over

“Well done! You’ve done the best you could. Don’t look at the questions with your friends, as this can make you worry more. Concentrate on your next exam. But take a rest first.

II. Read and answer the questions below. (1 point)

There are two types of air pollution. That is the outdoor air pollution caused by factories, automobiles and biological matter. We most commonly associate air pollution with smog and acid rain. That is of course a problem and you might be surprised how aware children are of the air pollution concerns. However, there is also indoor air pollution. Indoor air pollution causes just as many health problems around the globe as outdoor air pollution. And because many people are not aware of it, they suffer unnecessarily. According to the World Health Organization, 2.4 million people die each year from air pollution and 1.5 million of these deaths are caused by indoor air pollution. Educating young  kids about  air pollution can be an efficient solution to this alarming worldwide issue because it can make them somewhat aware of air pollution. They may have heard about the greenhouse effect, global warming and acid rain. These problems may be  frightening for children to hear. However, children also have the power to make changes both inside their home and globally.

6.      What causes the outdoor air pollution?

7.      Is indoor air pollution a reason for nearly as many health problems in the world as outdoor one?

8.      Why do people suffer from the air pollution unnecessarily?

Dear Sir,

I am writing to state my dissatisfaction and problems about the current accommodation I have at college. Therefore, I would like to request you to arrange me a new room from the next session.

Although my current room is nice and wide with attached bathroom and other facilities are pretty good, I am not satisfied with my roommate because of his immature attitude and carelessness towards cleaning and maintenance of the room. Moreover, he has a big social circle and invites lots of friends to the room on regular basis. They would like to do talk loudly, dancing, singing, even sometimes drinking which really ruin my personal life and often disturb me in preparing for exams. Last but not least, he has a tendency to use my personal belongings without taking into consideration of my permission. In the last few months, I have lost some of my valuables from the room and I am not sure who should I blame!

Thus, I would wish to have a single room, so that I can have freedom of work and relax according to my own will. In addition to this, I would be able to concentrate more on my studies in the absence of any interference. I hope you would be kind enough to understand my severer issues related to my roommate and would arrange me a new room from the next term.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Yours faithfully,
David

Direction: As if you are the person in charge of arranging accommodation for students, read the letter and give a suitable response.

Dear David,

I sympathize with your dissatisfaction with your roommate and I also thank you for your information about your roommate
As I know, your roommate is a new student at our college. Many new students are often unfamiliar with collective life. Therefore, they can make other students discontent, particularly for former's. If I were you, I would talk honestly with him on the issues with which you are not satisfied. Then he will possibly change his life style, so that you both will understand and respect each other.
Actually, at present, our dormitory still has two rooms. If you do not like it here, you can move room at the end of this month. However, there is no single room anymore and you must share a room with someone else. But you do not worry. The roommate you will live with is a good student. He studies hard. He is one of the best students who was rewarded one of by the college for good achievements in the last semester. Therefore, I hope you and your future roommate can get on well with and support each other in study.
As a person in charge of the accommodation, tomorrow, I will meet your roommate and talk with him about your complaint to help him recognize his fault and avoid disturbing you. If he still does not change his habits, I will force him to move out of the dormitory. I hope it will be of benefit to you and others.
Finally, wish you would get along well with new your roommate. Besides, I hope that you will do well in your exams next term. If you would like any further information about this, you can come to my office or email: leetran@abccollege.com

I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,
Lee Tran

Thousands of years before Columbus came to the New World, the American Indians entered North America by crossing a narrow strip of land that once connected Alaska and Siberia. The migrants entered a new world in which there were no people at all. But there were many animals to hunt, and there were forests where nuts, roots, and berries could be gathered.

When the Europeans came to the New World, the Indians, at first, taught the settlers how to plant corn, bake fish, make canoes, and smoke tobacco. In return, the white introduced horses, guns, gunpowder, and alcohol. But at last, there were struggles for land, and the struggles could have only one result – war. When the wars were over, all Indians were moved to large tracts of land called reservations. Now, some of them, embittered by mistreatment, are determined to preserve their tribal life; some wish to modernize the reservations. These alternatives, with many variations, are what most Indians have chosen – a future in modern technology and education, or the revival of ancient tradition and treaties.

The Indians moved to a new world which was ___________ .

A:inhabited by primitive men.            B:inhabited in by American migrants.          C:completely uninhabited by other people.                                                                                               D:once settled by Europeans.
