Fears that American teenage prescription drug trend has arrived in UK as 20 youngsters taken ill in one city

Parents have been urged to warn their children about the dangers of raiding the medical cabinet, amid fears that the American teenage trend of taking prescription drugs has arrived in Britain after 20 youngsters were taken ill in one city.

Wiltshire Police sent out an appeal after 20 youngsters, aged 15 and 16, in Salisbury needed medical treatment in the past week from taking Xanax, a drug that is prescribed by doctors to treat anxiety orders and panic attacks. Recreational use of the drug has gained traction among young people in America, with 16 school students hospitalised in New Mexico earlier this year.

Harry Shapiro, founder and director of DrugWise, a drug information service, said that the drug could have spread to the UK through the influence of American rappers on YouTube. “It is a relatively recent phenomenon but it seems to be a bit of a thing at the moment. I’ve heard about it being used in the West Midlands, in Bristol and in south London,” he said.

Corn was an important food for the Indians. It was also important for the religion. When Columbus and other Europeans visited the New World, they saw this. When the Indians and Europeans had their first Thanksgiving, they ate popcorn. Today Thanksgiving is an important holiday in the United States, but people don’t usually eat popcorn for this holiday now. In the 1920s, people started selling popcorn at movies. Now most movie theaters in the United States sell popcorn. Popcorn and movie go together very well.
Is popcorn good for you? Yes, it is. However, some people put a lot of salt and butter or
vegetable oil on it. It tastes good that way, but it is not very good for you.

What Is the Future of US Nuclear Power Industry?

As America’s nuclear power industry continues to suffer major economic difficulties, some are questioning whether it can - or should - survive. The latest setback came July 31, when state power companies in South Carolina halted construction of two reactors. After spending about $9 billion, the companies decided that increasing costs and repeated building delays did not make the project worth finishing.

U.S. energy company Westinghouse Electric had been building the nuclear plant, which it started in 2012. In March, Westinghouse filed for bankruptcy, due in part to huge losses related to the South Carolina project, as well as others. Industry groups had hoped the South Carolina reactors would mark a new beginning for U.S. nuclear power and show the benefits of the latest technology. The United States remains the world’s top producer of nuclear power, according to the British-based World Nuclear Association. The country’s 100 reactors provide nearly 20 percent of total U.S. electrical output.

However, only two new nuclear reactors are currently being built in the United States – both of them in Georgia. The reactors were the first large nuclear plants to be started in the United States in more than 30 years. And the future of those reactors is uncertain. The project - currently about half-finished - has also suffered major cost overruns and delays. For now, the company’s parent, Japan-based Toshiba, has promised to provide at least $3.7 billion to finish the project.

The chief executive officers of America's largest companies were paid an average of $15.6 million in 2016 says a recent study by an economic research group. The Economic Policy Institute published the report written by Lawrence Mischel and Jessica Schieder. They say the average business leader’s pay was 271 times what an average worker earns at the companies they studied.

This chief executive-to-worker pay ratio is smaller than it has been in the past few years. In 2014, the ratio was 299-to-1, according to the report. However, it is still much higher than the 20-to-1 ratio between chief executives and workers in 1965. In 1989, that difference was 59-to-1. In the last 30 years, the salaries of chief executive officers, or CEOs, has grown much faster than the pay of the average worker at the companies they oversee. In addition, CEO’s pay has increased much faster than the value of stock shares in the companies they lead.
