The planet Earth is 4,600 million years old. It is difficult for us to think about such an enormous length of time because it has little meaning for us. We can, however, simplify the idea to make it more understandable. We can compare the planet Earth to a person of forty-six years of age.

Nothing is known about the first seven years of this person’s life. Very little information exists about the middle period either. It was only at the age of forty-two that the Earth began to flower.

Dinosaurs and great reptiles did not appear until one year ago, when the planet was forty-five. Mammals only arrived eight months ago. In the middle of last week, man-like apes became ape-like men and began to communicate with each other. Last weekend, the Ice Age covered the Earth.

Modern man has only been around for four hours. During the last hour man discovered agriculture. The Industrial Revolution and the rise of large cities began just sixty seconds ago.

During that short time, Modern man has made a rubbish tip of the Earth. In one minute, he has increased his numbers to terrible proportion, and has caused the death of hundreds of species of animals. He has robbed and destroyed the planet in his search for fuels. Now he stands, like a violent, spoilt child, delighted at the speed of his rise to power, on the edge of the final mass destruction and of killing all the life which exists in the solar system.

Earth is losing wildlife at a faster rate than at any time in history. This is according to the new "Living Planet Report" from the World Wildlife Fund. The report says the global wildlife population shrank by 60 per cent between 1970 and 2014. The WWF warned that: "Earth is losing biodiversity at a rate seen only during mass extinctions." Researchers state that most of the decline in our animal population is because of "exploding human consumption". There are more and more humans on this planet. We are eating more, overfishing, cutting down trees for beef production, consuming more, and using more energy and natural resources. This has resulted in a massive loss of habitat for animals. The report estimates that only a quarter of the world's land has been untouched by humans. This means human activity has greatly affected animals on three-quarters of Earth's surface. Researchers tracked more than 4,000 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and amphibians. They say the loss of animal life is worst in South and Central America. These regions saw an 89 per cent loss in the population of vertebrates in the past four decades. The WWF wrote: "The astonishing decline in wildlife population...is a [depressing] reminder, and perhaps the ultimate indicator, of the pressure we [put] on the planet." It warned: "We can be the generation that had its chance and failed to act; that let Earth slip away."

‘Super-Earth’ 40 light years away is best chance of finding life outside Solar System, say scientists

Point a high-powered telescope at the constellation Cetus, the sea monster, and it is just possible to make out a dim red dwarf star shining in the tail. Although it might seem unspectacular, orbiting around that star is a rocky planet that could hold the answer to whether we are alone in the universe.

Scientists say the planet is a ‘Super-Earth’ which is the best place to look for signs of life outside of the Solar System. Early indications suggest it has an atmosphere, and sits within the ‘Goldilocks Zone’ where it is neither too hot nor too cold for liquid water to exist.

And it is only 40 light years from Earth meaning that it could be possible to send a signal. The planet was found by an international team of scientists who have been studying data from European Space Observatory’s High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS) instrument which looks for regular changes in brightness of stars, which suggests a planet is passing by in orbit.

I. Read the passage and choose the best answer from A, B, C or D. LIFE OF A MAN Thomas is now in his sixties, and is one of the many homeless people who live on the streets he buys a newspaper most days. Today, with his fellow tramps, he reads about yesterday’ s student demonstration. Like many of the tramps that live under the bridge in New York, Thomas was not always so poor. A long time ago he was in the Navy, and like many who have been to sea for a long time, he has stayed slim and fit. Despite the strict organization on board ship, he loved the life, and had the opportunity to see many countries. He visited Poland and Russia; in South Africa he realized what he valued in each country was the people he met. He was always astonished and delighted by the ways in which the people he met differed from one country to another. Some day, he hopes, everyone will see the world as he does. After many happy years in Navy, he had to retire. The good things in life always come to an end. His mother and father had long since died and he’d lost touch with his other relatives. He came to New York and became an industrial designer. He was happy, although it wasn’t the same as the sea. He never wanted to get married and have children. And then there was the period of darkness. He smiles sadly. He shrugs his shoulders and looks at his hands. There are tears in the corners of his eyes. This is something that he cannot bring himself to talk about. “It all went wrong”, he whispers. He was silent for a minute; then recovered. He began to talk more loudly. “Look at me now it makes me angry. And what about the President? He’s been in power for years, and look what he’s done for us. Nothing! I’m still out on the streets and live the life of a tramp.” 39. It would appear that Thomas _________ A. has organized a protest recently. B. takes an interest in important events. C. has no contact with other homeless people. D. is not as poor as he used to be. 40. When Thomas was in the Navy, he _________ A. only visited three countries. B. enjoyed the strict life on board ship. C. was very well paid for the job he did. D. liked meeting people from different countries. 41. Thomas changed his job because he _________ A. was too old to stay in the Navy. B. wanted to start a family. C. wanted to be near his relatives in New York. D. did not enjoy the work any more. 42. Thomas lost his job and became a tramp because _________ A. he did not have any family. B. he was tired of doing normal job. C. of reasons he does not want to discuss D. of the death of his parents. 43. The text states that Thomas thinks the President _________ A. should not allow home people to stay on the streets. B.should increase pensions for oldpeople. C. has not had enough time to change things. D.should have done more to help people like him
