The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded annually and the first woman to win this prize was Baroness Bertha Felicie Sophie von Suttner in 1905. In fact, her work inspired the creation of the Prize. The first American woman to win this prize was Jane Addams, in 1931. However, Addams is best known as the founder of Hull House.

Jane Addams was born in 1860, into a wealthy family. She was one of a small number of women in her generation to graduate from college. Her commitment to improving the lives of those around her led her to work for social reform and world peace. In the 1880s Jane Addams traveled to Europe. While she was in London, she visited a ‘settlement house’ called Toynbee Hall. Inspired by Toynbee Hall, Addams and her friend, Ellen Gates Starr, opened Hull House in a neighborhood of slums in Chicago in 1899. Hull House provided a day care center for children of working mothers, a community kitchen, and visiting nurses. Addams and her staff gave classes in English literacy, art, and other subjects. Hull House also became a meeting place for clubs and labor unions. Most of the people who worked with Addams in Hull House were well educated, middle-class women. Hull House gave them an opportunity to use their education and it provided a training ground for careers in social work.

Before World War I, Addams was probably the most beloved woman in America. In a newspaper poll that asked, “Who among our contemporaries are of the most value to the community?”, Jane Addams was rated second, after Thomas Edison. When she opposed America’s involvement in World War I, however, newspaper editors called her a traitor and a fool, but she never changed her mind. Jane Addams was a strong champion of several other causes. Until 1920, American women could not vote. Addams joined in the movement for women’s suffrage and was a vice president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. She was a founding member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and was president of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. . Her reputation was gradually restored during the last years of her life. She died of cancer in 1935.

Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?

A. the work of Baroness Bertha Felicie Sophie von Suttner was an inspiration to Jane Addam

B. Jane Addams is most famous for her opening of Hull House

C. those who lived near Hull House had very poor literacy skills

D. Jane Addams considered herself as a citizen of the world rather than of one particular country

The ability of falling cats to right themselves in midair and land on their feet has been a source of wonder for ages. Biologists long regarded it as an example of adaptation by natural selection, but for physicists it bordered on the miraculous.

Newton's laws of motion assume that the total amount of spin of a body cannot change unless an external torque speeds it up or slows it down. If a cat has no spin when it isreleased and experiences no external torque, it ought not to be able to twist around as it falls.

In the speed of its execution, the righting of a tumbling cat resembles a magician's trick. The gyrations of the cat in midair are too fast for the human eye to follow, so the process is obscured. Either the eye must be speeded up, or the cat's fall slowed down for the phenomenon to be observed. A century ago the former was accomplished by means of high-speed photography using equipment now available in any pharmacy. But in the nineteenth century the capture on film of a falling cat constituted a scientific experiment.

The experiment was described in a paper presented to the Paris Academy in 1894. Two sequences of twenty photographs each, one from the side and one from behind, show a white cat in the act of righting itself. Grainy and quaint though they are, the photos show that the cat was dropped upside down, with no initial spin, and still landed on its feet. Careful analysis of the photos reveals the secret; as the cat rotates the front of its body clockwise, the rear and tail twist counterclockwise, so that the total spin remains zero, in perfect accord with Newton's laws. Halfway down, the cat pulls in its legs before reversing its twist and then extends them again, with the desired end result. The explanation was that while nobody can acquire spin without torque, a flexible one can readily change its orientation, or phase. Cats know this instinctively, but scientists could not be sure how it happened until they increased the speed of their perceptions a thousandfold

Which of the following can be inferred about high-speed photography in the late 1800's?

A. It was a relatively new technology

B. The necessary equipment was easy to obtain

C. The resulting photographs are difficult to interpret

D. It was not fast enough to provide new information

Đáp án A

Thông tin: A century ago the former was accomplished by means of high-speed photography using equipment now available in any pharmacy. But in the nineteenth century the capture on film of a falling cat constituted a scientific experiment.

Phương án A. It was a relatively new technology = nó là một công nghệ rất mới, là phương án chính xác nhất.

          B. The necessary equipment was easy to obtain = Các thiết bị cần thiết là dễ dàng để có được.

Đó là khi ở thế kỷ XX thì các thiết bị cần thiết mới dễ dàng có được, chứ cuối những năm 1800 thì không.

          C. The resulting photographs are difficult to interpret = Những hình ảnh thu được rất khó để giải thích.

By 1868 it was said that a club would have their regular professional ten, an amateur first - nine, and their “muffins” (the gentlemanly duffers who once ran the game). Beginning with the first openly all - salaried team (Cincinnati’s Red Stocking Club) in 1869, the 1870- 1890 period saw the complete professionalization of baseball, including formation of the National Association of Professional baseball players in 1871. The National League of Professional Baseball Clubs was formed in 1876, run by business-minded invertors in joint-stock company clubs. The 1880s has been called Major League Baseball’s “Golden Age”. Profits soared, player’s salaries rose somewhat, a season of 84 games became one of 132, a weekly periodical “The sporting News” came into being, wooden stadiums with double-deck stands replaced open fields, and the standard refreshment became hot dogs, soda pop and peanuts. In 1900 the Western League based in the growing cities of the Mis west proclaimed itself the American League.

Which of the following is true of the way the game was played by wealthy gentlemen at its inception?

A. A team might consist of 40 members.

B. The president would choose teams from among the members.

C. They didn’t play on weekend.

D. They might be called “duffers” if they didn’t make the first nine.

Đáp án C.

Key words: true, way, wealthy gentlemen, inception

Clue: Games were played on Monday and Thursday afternoons: Các trận đẩu diễn ra vào chiều thứ 2 và chiều thứ 5

Phân tích đáp án:

  A. a team might consist of 40 members: một đội có thể bao gồm 40 thành viên

  B. the president would choose teams from among the members: Trưởng câu lạc bộ sẽ lựa chọn trong số các thành viên để thành lập đội

  C. they didn’t play on weekend: họ không chơi vào cuối tuần

  D. they might be called “duffers” if they didn’t make the first nine: Họ sẽ bị cho là người ngớ ngẩn nếu họ không ghi được 9 điêm đầu tiên

Đáp án A sai vì dòng 10 có A club might consist 40 members, một câu lạc bộ không phải một đội.

Đáp án B sai vì ở dòng 10 và 11 có The president would appoint two captains who would choose teams from among the members, trưởng câu lạc bộ sẽ chỉ định 2 đội trưởng, đội trưởng sẽ chọn thành viên

Đáp án D sai vì ở dòng 16 có “an amateur first - nine”, họ sẽ bị cho là người nghiệp dư

Vậy đáp án chính xác là C.
