My dream smart home …

The bedroom: When I go to bed, the smart bed automatically gets warm. When I am asleep, it controls the temperature. In the morning, when I wake up, my robot makes me a cup of tea. I drink the tea in bed and then get up.

The bathroom has a smart shower. When my sister is in the shower, it stops after five minutes and says to her, “Your brother wants to use the bathroom now.” The smart mirror says nice things to me like, “Your hair is great today!”

The kitchen has a smart fridge. It orders food from the Internet. My smart fridge orders food for all my family, and it knows our favorite food. It talks to my family. It says, “Don’t eat that, it’s John’s!”

The living room: The smart TV knows what I like, and it finds things that I want to watch. It doesn’t listen to other people.

My smart robot: My smart robot looks after the dog. It gives him food and it takes him out for exercise.

Nowadays humans are still wondering what planets in outer space might support life.

Scientists say planets need to meet three main conditions to support life. Firstly, they must have liquid water, so their temperature must not be too high or too low. Secondly, the planets need to have the correct amount of air so that they can hold an atmosphere around. Finally, their size is also important. If a planet is too small, its gravity is not strong enough to hold an enough amount of air. If it is too big, its gravity will be so strong that it will hold too much air.

Scientists are using space telescopes to find habitable planets. According to them, Mars is one of the most promising planets for life in our solar system. It is a planet like Earth. Its days last for 24.5 hours and its seasons are similar to Earth's. Although scientists have not found actual water on Mars, there seems to be traces of it on the planet's surface. However, the climate on Mars is unsuitable for human life because it is too cold and Mars lacks oxygen to support human life.

Teen's life

I don't want to be the odd one out!

"My parents don’t want me to hang out with my friends from school. They think those friends have a bad influence onme. They aren’t happy that instead of going home after school, we go to games centres to play video games. But I think it’s fun, and! don’t want to lose my friends," Thanh, 17.

“One day I coloured my hair and painted my finger nails. My parents got so angry with me. I know that this is not allowed at school, but all the girls in my group of friends did the same. I don’t want to be the odd one out!" Van, 16.

[ A ] The emails we have received from teenagers this week point to the effects of peer pressure, which is when you do things because you want to be accepted or valued by your friends. If teens fail to do what their group of friends want them to do, they may not be accepted or may even be bullied.

[ B ] In many cases, peer pressure can lead to depression, low self-confidence, distance from family and poor school performance. It can also lead to bigger social issues. It was reported that 70% of teenage smokers surveyed in the US said that they started smoking because they had friends who were smoking.

[ C ] It is not always easy to stand up to peer pressure, but sooner or later you need to decide what is best for you. Choose the right friends, learn to say no when you don’t feel comfortable and don’t hesitate to talk to an adult when the situation looks dangerous. And remember it’s sometimes OK to be "the odd one out".

They read books to the people in these places, or they just visit them and play games with them or listen to their problems. Other young volunteers go and work in the home of people who are sick or old. They paint, clean up, or repair their houses, do the shopping. For boys who don’t have fathers, there is an organization called Big Brothers. College students and other men take these boys to basketball games or on fishing trips and help them to get to know things those boys usually learn from their fathers. Each city has a number of clubs where boys and girls can go and play games. Some of these clubs show movies or hold short trip to the mountains, the beaches, museums, or other places of interest. Most of these clubs use a lot of students as volunteers because they are young enough to understand the problems of younger boys and girls.
