The ability of falling cats to right themselves in midair and land on their feet has been a source of wonder for ages. Biologists long regarded it as an example of adaptation by natural selection, but for physicists it bordered on the miraculous.

Newton's laws of motion assume that the total amount of spin of a body cannot change unless an external torque speeds it up or slows it down. If a cat has no spin when it isreleased and experiences no external torque, it ought not to be able to twist around as it falls.

In the speed of its execution, the righting of a tumbling cat resembles a magician's trick. The gyrations of the cat in midair are too fast for the human eye to follow, so the process is obscured. Either the eye must be speeded up, or the cat's fall slowed down for the phenomenon to be observed. A century ago the former was accomplished by means of high-speed photography using equipment now available in any pharmacy. But in the nineteenth century the capture on film of a falling cat constituted a scientific experiment.

The experiment was described in a paper presented to the Paris Academy in 1894. Two sequences of twenty photographs each, one from the side and one from behind, show a white cat in the act of righting itself. Grainy and quaint though they are, the photos show that the cat was dropped upside down, with no initial spin, and still landed on its feet. Careful analysis of the photos reveals the secret; as the cat rotates the front of its body clockwise, the rear and tail twist counterclockwise, so that the total spin remains zero, in perfect accord with Newton's laws. Halfway down, the cat pulls in its legs before reversing its twist and then extends them again, with the desired end result. The explanation was that while nobody can acquire spin without torque, a flexible one can readily change its orientation, or phase. Cats know this instinctively, but scientists could not be sure how it happened until they increased the speed of their perceptions a thousandfold

Which of the following can be inferred about high-speed photography in the late 1800's?

A. It was a relatively new technology

B. The necessary equipment was easy to obtain

C. The resulting photographs are difficult to interpret

D. It was not fast enough to provide new information

Đáp án A

Thông tin: A century ago the former was accomplished by means of high-speed photography using equipment now available in any pharmacy. But in the nineteenth century the capture on film of a falling cat constituted a scientific experiment.

Phương án A. It was a relatively new technology = nó là một công nghệ rất mới, là phương án chính xác nhất.

          B. The necessary equipment was easy to obtain = Các thiết bị cần thiết là dễ dàng để có được.

Đó là khi ở thế kỷ XX thì các thiết bị cần thiết mới dễ dàng có được, chứ cuối những năm 1800 thì không.

          C. The resulting photographs are difficult to interpret = Những hình ảnh thu được rất khó để giải thích.

Không có thông tin như vậy trong bài.

          D. It was not fast enough to provide new information = Nó không đủ nhanh để cung cấp thông tin mới.

1.Nowadays, developing society should lead to many types of environmental pollution such as: land pollution, water pollution, thermal pollution, ...ect. Among them, noise pollution greatly affects people and animals life. Noise pollutions happen when the sound's loudness is more than 70 dBs. Sound of vehicles is the cause of noise pollution or turning on the music too loudly also affects the hearing of people around, especially in bars, concerts, or karaoke bars. If you experience noise pollution for a long time, you can have headache, high blood pressure and hearing loss, ect. Some tips to reduce noise pollution. For examples, wearing earplugs when you go to concerts or other loud events. Listening to music through headphones or headsets at safe levels. I hope noise pollution will decrease in the future.

Geographers say that what defines a place are four properties: soil, climate, altitude, and aspect, or attitude to the Sun. Florida’s ancient scrub demonstrates this principle. Its soil is pure silica, so barren it supports only lichens as ground cover. (It does, however, sustain a sand- swimming lizard that cannot live where there is moisture or plant matter the soil.) Its climate, despite more than 50 inches of annual rainfall, is blistering desert plant life it can sustain is only the xerophytic, the quintessentially dry. Its altitude is a mere couple of hundred feet, but it is high ground on a peninsula elsewhere close to sea level, and its drainage is so critical that a difference of inches in elevation can bring major changes in its plant communities. Its aspect is flat, direct, brutal – and subtropical. Florida’s surrounding lushness cannot impinge on its desert scrubbiness.

This does not sound like an attractive place. It does not look much like one either; Shrubby little oaks, clumps of scraggly bushes, prickly pear, thorns, and tangles. “It appear Said one early naturalist,” to desire to display the result of the misery through which it has Passed and is passing.” By our narrow standards, scrub is not beautiful; neither does it meet our selfish utilitarian needs. Even the name is an epithet, a synonym for the stunted, the scruffy, the insignificant, what is beautiful about such a place?

The most important remaining patches of scrub lie along the Lake Wales Ridge, a chain of paleoislands running for a hundred miles down the center of Florida, in most places less than ten miles wide. It is relict seashore, tossed up millions of years ago when ocean levels were higher and the rest of the peninsula was submerged. That ancient emergence is precisely what makes Lake Wales Ridge so precious: it has remained unsubmerged, its ecosystems essentially undisturbed, since the Miocene era. As a result, it has gathered to itself one of the largest collections of rare organisms in the world. Only about 75 plant species survive there, but at least 30 of these are found nowhere else on Earth.

The author mentions all of the following as factors that define a place EXCEPT ___.

A. life-forms

B. aspect

C. soil

D. altitude
