EX13: Read the passage carefully, then do the tasks:
Household air pollution
About 3 billion people cook using wood, coal or crop waste on open fires traditional stoves. This cooking causes household air pollution. This type of pollution contains health damaging pollutants. It can lead to child and adult diseases such as heart disease and lung cancer.
The governments would reduce poverty if they reduced solid fuel (wood, coal) use. Cleaner fuels such as biogas, electricity and solar power should replace solid fuels. We can also reduce indoor air pollution by drying fuel wood before use or keeping children from smoke. Moreover, we can lower pollution levels by using improved stoves. These stoves are effective in reducing smoke because of lower emission levels and shorter cooking times.
Task A: Mark the sentences T (True) or F (False)
1. About 2 billion people use wood or coal for cooking: F
2. Household air pollution contains pollutants harmful to health: T
3. Household water pollution results in heart disease and lung cancer: F
4. Solid fuels are oil and gas: F
5. Outdoor air pollution is another phrase for household air pollution: F
6. Cleaner fuels should replace coal or wood: T
7. We don’t have to dry fuel wood before use to reduce indoor air pollution: F
8. Using improved stoves is another way to increase pollution levels: F
Task B: Read the passage again and finish the sentences
1. Some solid fuels are wood, coal and ………………………………………
2. Some child and adult diseases are heart disease and lung cancer.
3. Some cleaner fuels are biogas, electricity and solar power
4. Cleaner fuels should replace solid fuels
5. We can drying fuel wood before use to reduce indoor air pollution
6. lower emission levels and shorter cooking times are two reasons why improved stoves
EX14: Read the passage and answer the questions
Land pollution is another term for soil contamination (for example, by factory chemicals or sewage and other wastewater). It means any kind or long – term land damage, destruction, degradation or loss.
Air and water pollution disappear, but land pollution doesn’t. It stays exactly where it is. Radiation can contaminate for thousands of years. That means radioactive waste dumps remain that way indefinitely.
The biggest problem comes when contaminated land is returned to use as buildings or agriculture land. People might get their water from rivers. Diseases might happen over years for this reason.
We should try to find a way of stopping or reducing land pollution. We should recycle old things to reduce our need for new ones. Also, we need to clean up many contaminated sites.
1. What’s another term for land pollution?
