All five senses are important to us, but the two most important senses are likely the sense of sight and the sense of hearing. Blind and deaf people must find life difficult because they are unable to do things that the rest of us can do naturally. People who lose their sense of taste can not enjoy food as well as they used to, whilst men who have no sense of smell can not realize, for example , when gas is leaking or food has gone out. In addition to our physical senses, which is a great help in life to have sense of humour, especially when things go wrong, and to have common sense, something which can not be learned from books

Issues in big cities

These days, more and more people prefer urban life because of all the opportunities it brings about, namely job opportunity, recreational facilities, decent education and high standard of living. However, once they settle down in a city, they have to face up to more than one problem.

To begin with, the life in the urban city is also very stressful and busy. City dwellers often have a hectic pace of life, which means that they rarely have enough time for recreational activities. People have to work hard and compete fiercely to earn a decent living, which puts people under a lot of pressure. Moreover, working hard and extra working hours mean that urban residents have very short time for their family and friends. Many people have complained that parents in the cities do not pay much attention to their children and people tend to talk less to each other.

Furthermore, people have to put up with heavy pollution in the city. There are many kinds of pollution such as air, water, land, noise and even light pollution. This is understandable because there are numerous pollutants in the city. For example, exhaust fumes from vehicles or emissions from factories are the main causes of air pollution. Pollution is detrimental to human health. It can create some incurable diseases for people such as lung cancer when we inhale too much fume and dusk.

Another serious problem is unemployment, while many people move to the city with hope of find a job, their dreams turn sour due to the competitive job market. In the city the demand for the quality of workforce is getting higher and higher. Poorly-trained workers from rural areas may become jobless in the city.

In conclusion, should people want to move from the countryside to the urban areas, they have to consider all the advantages and disadvantages before making up their mind.

_____ 1. There are more opportunities than problems for people living in the urban areas.

_____ 2. Although people in the city are busy, they can always have time for entertainment activities.

_____ 3. People have to work hard and compete fiercely to make money.

_____ 4. People don’t have to tolerate heavy pollution in the city.

_____ 5. Air pollution is the most serious issue in the city.

_____ 6. The competitive job market in the city causes difficulties for workers with low quality to find a job.

Question I.The following passage contains ten mistakes. Identify and correct them. (10pts)

If there is one characteristic of British work in the arts that seems to stand out is its shortage of identification with wide intellectual trends. Playwrights and directors can be left-wing in their political lout-out, but the plays they produce rarely convey a straightforward message. The same is largely true of British novelists and poets. Their writing is naturalistic and is not connected to particular intellectual movements. The theatre had always been very strong in Britain, especially in London. The country’s most successful playwrights are those who explore the darker side of the personality and of personal relationships. In contrast, the cinema in Britain is often regarded as not quite part of the arts in all, it is simply entertainment. Britain is unique between the large European countries in giving mostly no financial help to their film industry. Classical music is also a minority interest. British seem disinterested in high education, they watch lots of television, but are enthusiastic readers. The vast minority of books reading in Britain are not classified as serious literature.

Question II:The following passage contains ten mistakes. Identify and correct them. (10pts)

I have a briefcase full of papers which describes cases Sherlock Homes has investigated. Some are failures since there were some final explanations for the mysteries in question. A problem without a solution may interest the specialist, but will offer little to the general reader. Among these finishing stories is that of the yacht Alicia, which one morning sailed into the mist and disappeared forever; the vessel along the crew were never seen again. Then there was the case of the well-known journalist Luigi Persano, who found completely mad with a jar in front of him. A jar contained a remarkable worm, unknown by science up to that point. Apart from these mysterious cases to which Holmes did not find solution, there are those which various influence people would rather no see on print and those which might affect the reputation of Holmes himself, for whom I have more respectness than for any man alive
