VIII. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

When children are exposed to electronic devices a lot, they may face problems in psychological health. According to a research by the British Psychological Association, children who spend a lot of time using smartphones often suffer from insomnia. Sleep is very important, which helps them to develop their brains. If children lack sleep, it will greatly affect their development and learning. Long-term insomnia leads to concentration disorders and cognitive decline. Besides, children's eyes are still developing, if exposed to radiation from phones will impair vision and cause many eye diseases.

In order to limit negative impacts on children, many countries around the world have regulations to regulate children's exposure to digital devices. In Vietnam, although there have been no surveys on children using electronic devices, in fact most young children, even under 2 years old, have been exposed to television, smartphones Parents are busy so they choose to let their children watch their phones or tablets so that they can easily work, rest, or simply feed the children..

If the rule prohibiting children from using phones is applied to the law, it will cause controversy. Therefore, careful discussion is needed, especially consulting experiences in countries that have successfully applied it in the world or repuuibile organizations such as WHO. In addition, it is necessary to have the opinions of experts in engineering, psychology, rehabilitation, occupational therapy, etc.

When children are addicted to smart mobile devices, they need to be gradually separated from the gadgets. Most importantly, parents must "invest" in their relationship with their children by talking more. Parents need to set an example ani not use electronic devices in front of their children. Instead, spend time playing with your child like doing puzzles, reading books, participating in physical activities, or doing housework with your child

Air pollution is a cause of ill-health in human beings. In a lot of countries there are laws limiting the amount of smoke which factories can produce. Although there isn’t enuogh information on the effects of smoke in the atmosphere, doctors have proved that air pollution causes lung diseases.

The gases from the exhausts of cars have also increased air pollution in most cities. The lead in petrol produces a poisonous gas which often collects in busy streets surrounded by high buildings. Children who live in areas where there is a lot of lead in the atmosphere can’t think as quickly as other children and are clumsy when they use their hands.

There are other long-term effects of pollution. If the gases in the atmosphere continue to increase , the earth’s climate may become warmer. A lot of the ice near the Poles ma melt and may cause serious floods.

Television and Kids

Television is very popular and even has some benefits for kids. It helps very young children learn the letters of the alphabet, and helps other kids learn about science, cultures, and world events.

However, researchers show that too much TV is bad for children. For one thing, there is a link between watching more than four hours of TV a day and being overweight. For another thing, many TV shows are violent and upsetting. Watching these shows may cause kids to be more fearful. And of course, more time in front of the TV means less time to study. Too much TV may also be the cause of lower grades. Experts do not agree on the solution to these problems. Some say that kids should watch only educational programs; others say kids should watch no TV at all. And others suggest teaching them to watch TV as occasional entertainment, not as an everyday hobby.

It's hard to imagine education without energy. Without energy, people's ability to get a decent education is severely affected. Education is acknowledged as a crucial factor in helping people escape from poverty. In communities without energy children are often forced out of school to help collect cooking materials or earn money. When they do go to school it has to be in daylight , which restricts their hours especially as many children walk for hours to get there. When they arrive home to do their schoolwork, they have no light to study and all that greets them is darkness. Or they have to rely on kerosenl to provide precious light, which is both expensive and dangerous; if a lamp is knocked over it can cause serious burns. Computers, radio or TV are important tools in the modern education. A lack of electricity restricts the opportunity for children to further their education. And teachers don't want to worlk in communties where there are no lights, little equipment, no TVs, computers or life after dark.

What is good writing for children?
The children’s publishers will tell you they look for ‘good writing’. What exactly do they mean?

Before you send a story you have written to any publisher at all, your severest critic ought to be you vourself. To have a chance of succeeding in the competitive market of children’s fiction, you should constantly be aware, every single time you sit down at your word-processor, of the need to produce ‘good, original writing’. A difficult task, maybe, but one which hopefully we will help you to achieve.

To begin with, let us try to pin down exactly what publishers mean when they talk about ‘good writing’ for children. A useful starting point would be to take a look at some of the children’s books which won literary prizes last year. Reading these books is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways of: (a) finding out what individual publishers are publishing at the moment, and (b) learning a few tricks of the trade from well-established professionals. It goes without saying, of course, that slavishly copying the style and subject matter of a successful author is usually a recipe for disaster. Nor should you become downhearted after reading a particularly brilliant piece of work, and miserably think you will never be able to match up to those standards. Remember, overnight success is rare - most successful children’s authors will have struggled long and hard to learn their trade. Read these books as a critic; note down the things you enjoyed or admired, as well as areas where you feel there was possibly room for improvement. After all, nobody is perfect, not even a successful, prize-winning author.

Possibly the toughest challenge is right at the youngest end of the age range - the picture book. The would-be author/ illustrator is attempting to create an exciting story out of the narrow, limited, everyday world of a young child’s experience - not easy at all. The whole storyline has to be strong enough to keep the reader turning the pages, yet simple enough to fit into a few pages. Another problem for the new picture-book author is that it can seem that every subject and every approach has been done to death, with nothing new left to say. Add to this the fact that printing costs are high because of full colour illustrations, which means that the publisher will probably want a text that suits the international market to increase sales, and a novel for ten-year olds, with hardly any pictures at all, starts to look much more inviting.

You would be forgiven for wondering if there are any truly original plots left to impress publishers with. But remember that, in many ways, it is the writer’s own personal style, and intelligent handling of a subject that can change a familiar, overworked plot into something original and fresh. To illustrate this, read The Enchanted Horse by Magdalen Nabb. A young girl called Irina finds an old wooden horse in a junk shop, takes it home and treats it as if it was real. Soon it magically starts to come to life ... Sounds familiar? The magic object that comes alive is a storyline that has been used in hundreds of other children’s stories. So why does it succeed here? The answer is that Magdalen Nabb has created a strong, believable character in the lonely, unhappy heroine Irina, and the descriptions of her relationship with the wooden horse are poetic and touching.

So, to return to the question asked at the beginning: What exactly is ‘good writing’ for children? The answer is that it is writing which is fresh, exciting and unpredictable, and which gives a new and original angle on what might be a well- worn subject. But do not be put off if you feel that you simply cannot match up to all these requirements. While there is obviously no substitute for talent, and the ability to come up with suitable ideas, many of the techniques for improving and polishing your manuscript can be learned.

8. Why does the article advise people to look at prize-winning books?

A. to copy the author’s style

B. to realise what a high standard needs to be reached
