Sports and games make our bodies strong and keep us healthy. But these are not their only uses. They give us valuable practice in making eyes, brain and muscles work together. For example, in tennis, our eyes see the ball coming, judge its speed and direction and pass this information on to the brain. The brain then has to decide what to do, and send its orders to the muscle of the arms legs, and so on. So tennis helps train the co-ordination among eyes, brain arms, and legs.

Sports and games are also useful for character training. In their lessons at school, boys and girls may learn about such virtues as unsefishness, courage discipline, and love of one's country. In sports and games a pupil can really practise these virtues.

Switzerland Has World’s Most Competitive Economy

Switzerland is the world’s most competitive economy, the World Economic Forum (WEF) reported on Wednesday. It said the Swiss economy has been more competitive than the economies of all other countries in each of the past nine years. In 2008, Switzerland finished in second place, after the United States.

The WEF, which is based in Geneva, produces a yearly report on economic competitiveness. The ratings are based on over 10 measures of competiveness and opinions of business leaders. Economist Thierry Geiger works for the group. He says “Switzerland had a virtuous circle of infrastructure, institutions and education.” He adds that its success came from its ability to create and use talent.

“That is really the secret of Switzerland, this ability to innovate,” he says, noting that there are many things fueling creativity. However, after almost 10 years at the top of the WEF ratings, Switzerland faces a new risk. Its population is aging. And Geiger fears that voters may decide to restrict the number of foreigners working in the country.

Television enables us to see things in distant places. It is indeed one off the most wonderful things that man has ever invented.

Pictures taken in all pát of the world are also shown on television for entertainment as well as for instruction. Short films based on popular stories are often shown which entertain millions of people all over the world.

In some countries television is used to teach pupils and students many useful lessons. Students who cannot go to school because of transport or other problems are taught all their lessons at home through television.

As television appeals to the eye instead of the ear, people enjoy watching more than listening to radio . Listening requires knowledge of many things, but what we see with our eyes expains that itself .

For all these reasons, there is no doubt that television will continue to be popular for a long time.

Question :

3. What do people prefer, watching or listening ?

4. How can students obtain knowledge if they cannot go to school ?

neighbors. In short, my neighborhood is nice to live in.My neighborhood is quiet. Even though it has the regular amoun of noise of any place, there are many peaceful moment. For example, after most people have gone to work, you can hardly hear any noise. Of course, when the kids get home, there is more noise; but, it is relatively quiet all day in my neighborhood. Also, I feel safe in my neighborhood. The police drive around it everyday and the kids play outside with no problems. Since there is not much traffic, we don’t worry too much about cars Furthermore, I can walk around my neighborhood without being afraid of someone hurting me. All in all, my neighborhood is secure. My neighbors are really good people. They watch out for each other and this makes where I live extra nice. If anyone has a problem with their car or even something in their house, a neighbor is usually there to help. One day, I couldn't start my car, and my neighbor asked what was wrong. I explained that my car wouldn’t start, and he got my car going again. This is just one of the many examples of how my neighbors are the best people I know. In conclusion, my neighborhood is a great place to live. There isn’t a lot of noise, it is secure, and most of all, the neighbors are helpful. There is no place like home and that is my neighborhood.

STORM CHASER

Most people run away from tornadoes, but Roger Hill runs toward them. He is a “storm chaser.” He takes photos of storms. He has photos of more than 650 tornadoes!

Hill runs a company called Silver Lining Tours. His company organizes trips for people who want to see tornadoes. He spends about four months every year traveling. He travels all over the United States looking for tornadoes. He finds them by checking the Internet for weather information. When he finds a storm, he starts driving toward it. His company’s cars have special equipment to help him follow the storms.

Whenever he's chasing and photographing tornadoes, Hill knows he needs to be safe. He says you can get close to a tornado and take a picture. However, if you make a mistake, it can kill you. So in a way, it’s like a photographer trying to take photos of grizzly bears. Before taking a photograph, you need to be ready and to have an escape route. Safety is really important!

Ex1 : Read the passage and answer the questions

My name is Peter , and this is my story. Last year just before Chirstmas my family and our cousins and relatives decided to go to Hawaii for holiday . We went in two cars but when we were about halfway there my uncle wanted to turn round and come back . He said it was too far , and it was terribly hot , too . Even at night it was really hot . Anyway , what we decided to do was to drive back about 150km to a place where the train went through . Then we put both cars on the train and we all went to Hawaii by train . That was fun .
