I was a postman in a remote area of Myanmar. Once a month I went downtown to collect the post and then walked from village to village, which were far away from each other. In each village, I delivered and collected the post. I also used to read and write letters for the villagers. Most of them were illiterate. I also passed on the news I had heard from the town and the other villages. The people treated me well. It was a hard job but I loved it.

U Sein Tun

from Myanmar

My mother came from Baffin Island. She used to live in an igloo: a domed house built from blocks of ice. The house had only one room for all the generations: grandparents, parents, brothers, unmarried sisters, and sometimes other relatives. Everyone worked together to survive the Arctic winter. Men went out hunting while women stayed at home making clothes and preparing food. When they had to travel far, they rode on dogsleds. At night they used to entertain themselves by telling and acting out stories. They danced to drum music too.

Even hundreds of years ago, children were taught to behave responsibly. They learnt to respect seniority. When they passed an object to another person, they had to use both hands. When they entered a room, they had to bow and greet the oldest person first. Boys learnt to work hard to support their families. Girls learnt to do housework, and to take care of others. Loyalty and honesty were highly appreciated. When they made a mistake, they would not let another person be punished for it. That would be cowardly and mean. They were taught that families were strong, and everybody should stick together in adversity. Fortunately, many of these values have been well preserved. They have contributed to making the unique Vietnamese culture, and strengthening our society.

I’ve just been back from my vacation in Hanoi, Vietnam. In this trip, I had a chance to visit some (1) villages that produce the finest craft works exported over the world.
The very first place I (2) foot on was Van Phuc silk village, the cradle of best silk in Vietnam once. I totally fall in love with many colourful clothes, hats, bags, tie... made of authentic silk. Then, I moved on to Bat Trang ceramic village, the most famous and (3) pottery village in Vietnam with a nearly 1,000 years old historic development. Here, I visited a small family factory to see how the (4) form, paint and glaze with unique products and have a chance to practice my talent with wet clay and a mould. Afternoon, I continued to visit Dong Ho folk painting village, (5) the traditional woodblock paintings are preserved. I was completely impressed by the folk paintings made by the local (6) artisans with natural materials and colors. Each painting is (7) handmade on paper of the Dzo tree and is coloured with other natural materials and its glittery surface is finished with oyster shell dust.
I took home a lot of handmade (8) which were later given to my family and friends.
