Most of us take language for granted. We use it every day - in spoken, written, auditory and electronic forms - while forgetting that it’s what makes human communication possible. Indeed, our ability to communicate - person ally or professionally - is primarily based on the existence of language. In countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia and the US where English is the primary la nguage, it’s even easier to dismiss the advantage of speaking a language that the rest of the world is now being forced to learn out of necessity. Nguy ễn Đức H ưng*  * - Marie Curie High School , HP. (  : 0912.883.190 ) More than two - thirds of the world’s population still does not use English. Yet, as the need to communicate globall y increases, English is fast becoming the number 1 choice for cross - bo rder communication world - wide. While increasing the ease of communication across borders, choosing a single global language also puts enormous pressure on those who do not speak the chosen language. Encouraging one particular tongue as a prim ary or secondary mode of communication in all countries also requires a serious commitment, along with extensive reso urces and funding. This issue also raises critical questions around the importance of global intelligibility versus a c ountry’s identity, as ther e is no more sensitive symbol of individual and national identity than one’s language. 1) According to the passage, what makes human communication possible? A. human’s ability to communicate B. language C. human’s love for each other D. human’s pr ofessions 2) Why is it easier for the Australian, the Americans and the British to take English for granted? A. Because they don’t like English. B. Because they are not forced to learn English. C. Because they still live well without speaking English. D. Because they were born with English as their primary language and they do not consciously realise its importance. 3) Based on the passage above, how many people use English world - wide? A. one - third of the world’s population B. two - thirds of the world’s population C. half of the world’s population D. 1.5 million people 4) Why is English becoming the number one language? A. Because it is the simplest language in the world. B. Because it is the language of the richest country in the world – the USA. C. Because English has long been used by many people. D. Because the need for communication across borderline increases. 5) Why should we be careful about choosing one particular language for all countries? A. Because it takes a lot of time for a ll people in the world to learn a certain language. B. Because all nations want to make their mother tongues the international language. C. Visitors to Vietnam should pay attention to the following advice.

Socializing

Vietnamese people like to ask questions about age, marriage, salary, etc when they meet someone for the first time. For example, they may ask, 'How old are you?', 'Are you married?', 'What do you do for a living?', 'Do you have any children?' Don't be embarrassed by these kinds of questions. This is the Vietnamese way of being friendly.

Presents

Vietnamese people always show their gratitude when receiving a gift. However, you should not be surprised if they do not open a present you had given them immediately. Opening a present in front of the gift-giver is considered to be embarrassing.

Although Vietnamese people always appreciate compliments, they are usually modest in their reactions. For example, in response to the compliment 'What a nice dress!' a Vietnamese girl may say, 'I don't think so. It's very old.'

The elderly

Always show the elderly respect. Bowing your head slightly to an elderly person is a sign of respect. During a meal, elderly people should be served first.

ead the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions. Last week I made the mistake of visiting the village where I grew up. It was a small, friendly community with two farms and a number of old cottages round the village green. I realized very quickly that although in many ways it appears unchanged, in reality hardly anything is the same. All the pretty cottages are there, of course, and both the picturesque farmhouses. But none of the inhabitants are country people. All of them are commuters, who leave early every morning for the nearby town. Neither of the farmhouses is attached to a farm these days; the land has been sold and is managed by somebody in an office somewhere who has little interest in the village itself. There are a few new houses, but they have no local character; you can see the same style anywhere in the country. The whole of the village, in fact, has been tidied up so much that it has become nothing more than just another suburb. 1. When the writer revisited his village, he quickly realized that _____________. A. the village changed a lot in appearance B. everything has almost changed C. all the pretty cottages as well as the farmhouses have been built D. the residents of the village are all commuters 2. Neither of the farmhouses _______________ A. has a connection with a farm B. has been sold C. is attached to the farmers. D. is managed by the commuters 3. The word “managed” in the line 8 can be best replaced by ______________. A. controlled B. spent C. used D. taken 4. According to the writer, __________________. A. the village now has no local character B. all the new houses are the same style C. the village is tidier than it used to D. the village has become nothing but a suburb 5. Which of the following is NOT MENTIONED in the passage? A. The writer has visited the village several times before. B. The writer revisited his village last week. C. In fact, the village has changed much. D. The village nowadays has become another suburb.
