Oral storytelling has been around as long as human language. Our ancestors probably gathered around the evening fires and talked about their fears and their beliefs through oral stories. This long tradition of storytelling is evident in ancient cultures such as the Australian Aborigines.
Early storytelling probably originates in simple chant. People sang chants as they worked at grinding corn or sharpening tools. Then they started to combine stories, poetry, music, and dance. The stories explained how life began and why things happened, as well as provided entertainment. Those who were excellent at storytelling became entertainers, educators, cultural advisors, and historians for the community. Through storytellers, the history of a culture was handed down from generation to generation.
In the 20th century, interest in oral storytelling has revived. A number of storytelling festivals were established. Storytelling festivals bring tellers to gether for entertaining, telling and education in the art.

Today I’m going to tell you about the xoe dance, a traditional dance of the Thai ethnic group in VietNam. Thai people have followed this spiritual tradition for generations.

The xoe dance expresses people’s working life and wishes for a happy and wealthy life. It is performed in both public and private gatherings such as celebrations, festivals or family reunions.

The xoe dance has more than 30 forms based on the first six ancient forms. The most popular form is the xoe vong or ‘circle dance’ because it expresses social unity. People, young or old alike, join hands to make a circle around the fire and dance to the music. Besides the circle dance, there are dances with conical hats, paper fans or scarves.

Old people say they shouldn’t break with this tradition because it reflects Thai culture and lifestyle. As a Thai folk song goes, without the xoe dance, the rice won’t grow and people won’t get married.

Choose the letter A, B, C or D to answer these following questions

Last week Nick and some of his classmates went to the countryside. They went to visit a farm of Nick’s uncle.

They left early in the morning and went there by bus. Nick’s uncle, Mr. Brown met them at the bus stop and took them to his farm. On the way, Uncle Brown showed them the field of wheat and vegetables where some tractors were running up and down, ploughing and breaking soil, distributing manure and planting potatoes.

After lunch, they all went for a walk. In the large yard of the farm, they saw some farm machines. Among them is the biggest machine which is called a combine harvester. They were told that this machine can cut and thresh corn at the same time.

In the afternoon, they went to the paddy field, the place where cattle such as horses, sheep and cows were raised. They were very excited to see how cows were milked by the workers there. Uncle Brown also spoke about many interesting things in the countryside. After having some fruits and cakes, they said goodbye and went home.
