Shichi-go-san means “seven-five-three” and the festival is for children who are seven, five and three. The Japanese think these ages are very important years. Japanese parents celebrate Shichi-go-san as their boys turn three and five and their girls turn three and seven.

At the age of seven, a girl wears obi - the piece of cloth worn round the waist over the kimono - for the first time. At the age of five, a boy wears his first hakama pants – the pants that Samurai wore in the past - in public. The age of three is important for the Japanese too. They think it is time children can let their hair grow.

COUNTRY MUSIC

There are many genres of music. A genre is a category of a kind of music. A few examples of music genre are classical, pop, rock, hip hop, blues, jazz, and country. October is country music month.

Country music came to America long ago. It came from England on a slave ship from America. In the United States, it began in the Southin the 1920s. That was a long time ago.

The music of Fiddin’ John Carson was one of the first hit in our country. It was then called ‘hillbilly’ music. You may be able to listen to this first song on the internet.

The fiddle (or violin) was the most common instrument because it was easy and inexpensive. Other instruments were added including the bargio, accordion, bass, guitar and drums. All of these instruments create different sounds.

Over the years, country music has become more popular. In 1927, 104 million units were sold. In the year of 2007, about 500 millions units were sold. It is safe to say that the country music genre is still very popular today.
