Thousands of people in Calcutta have no jobs and no proper.They live crowded togetherin homes made of mats,boxes and rusty sheets of tin.Many have to camp permanently in the railway stations,cooking,eating,sleeping and nursing thier babies there.Barbies are born in the streets and people die there too.

As many as seventeen out of every hundered families live in the streets having nowhere else to go.About one hundred thousand people sleep in the streets every night.Many of these people are sick,for in a hot and damp climate,fevers and diseases spread quickly.All the time,more and more people pour into the city,hoping to find a job and a share of the city's wealth.Although the government tries hard to provide houses,schools and medical services,it can hardly keep up with the increasing population.
