A Killer Whale?

Killer whales, also known as orcas, have a name that may make them sound especially dangerous. But with brains four times larger than human brains, killer whales are actually among the smartest creatures in the world.

The name “killer whale” is misleading. Before scientists began studying killer whales, they were known as dangerous, bloodthirsty monsters. But there is actually no record of any serious attacks by wild killer whales on humans at any point in history.

“Killer whale” is also misleading because the creatures are actually part of the family Delphinidae, meaning they are more like dolphins and porpoises than whales. Like common bottlenose dolphins, killer whales are intelligent and easy to teach, which is why you may see them doing tricks at aquariums or amusement parks.

By putting killer whales in captivity, scientists have learned a lot about them, and many people have been entertained by killer whale shows. But killer whales are at their healthiest and smartest when they remain free in the open ocean, where they travel up to 100 miles a day with their families, communicating with and teaching each other.

1. According to the passage, what is another name for killer whales?

  1. porpoises

  2. dolphins

  3. bottlenoses

  4. orcas

2. What is the name of the family that killer whales belong to?

  1. Delphiniden

  2. Dolphinidea

  3. Delphinidae

  4. Dolphinidae

3. As used in paragraph 3, the word intelligent most nearly means

  1. strange

  2. difficult

  3. smart

  4. dangerous

4. In the final paragraph, the passage says, “But killer whales are at their healthiest and smartest when they remain free in the open ocean, where they travel up to 100 miles a day with their families, communicating with and teaching each other.” From this we can understand that

  1. putting killer whales in captivity is not the best option for the creatures

  2. putting killer whales in captivity is not a problem for the creatures

  3. killer whales can learn more on their own in captivity

  4. killer whale tanks in aquariums provide as much freedom as the open ocean

5. Up to how many miles a day do wild killer whales swim with their families?

  1. 500

  2. 100

Exercise 8: Read the text below and choose the best answer for each question after the text.

Many people like to keep pets. Dogs and cats are very popular pets. Some people, however, keep birds or goldfish. They need less space and are easier to look after.

If you want to have a pet, you can buy one from a pet shop but you must be careful not to buy a sick animal. It Is best if you know something about the pet you want. This helps you choose a healthy pet. However, if you do not have much money and know very little about animals, you can visit the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA).

The first society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was founded in England in 1821. It was set up to make sure that all animals are treated with kindness. The RSPCA in Hong Kong carries out this aim. The RSPCA officers collect animals which have no homes and are left in the street. They look after them until they are healthy again. People visiting the RSPCA may choose their pets from these animals and you can be sure that you will get a healthy pet. If later your pet becomes ill, you can take it to the doctors at the RSPCA for treatment.

When you have a pet, it is very important that you look after it properly. You must remember to feed it at suitable times. You should also give it a clean and comfortable place to rest. Your pet will be happy and healthy if you love it and care for it properly.

Horse racing held on Saturday and Sunday in a Saigon suburb draws large crowds as thousands of Vietnamese, young and old, turn out to cheer the pint-sized Asiatic horses and jockeys on to victory. Betting is heavy, with profits going into the national treasury of Southern Vietnam. It is not uncommon to see a horse run the wrong way around the track.

Other popular sporting events include soccer, basketball, volleyball, swimming, hiking, ping pong, and tennis. Vietnam teams often compete with other countries in soccer, tennis, bicycling, basketball, and other sports.

There are few golf courses in Southern Vietnam. The one in Saigon is located near Tan Son Nhat Airport. Light pollution is not a new phenomenon. Over the last 50 years, as countries became affluent and urbanized, demand for outdoor lighting increased and light pollution sprawled beyond the city limits and into suburban and rural areas. This form pollution is now prevalent in Asia, Europe, and North America, particularly in cities like Los Angeles, New York and Washington D.C. In 2008, National Geographic magazine named Chicago the most light-polluted city in the United States.

However, the most light-polluted spot in the world is Hong Kong, China. In March 2013, the University of Hong Kong named the city the most light polluted in the world. A study by the university found the night sky in TsimShaTsui, an urban neighborhood in southern Kowloon, Hong Kong, to be 1,200 times brighter than a normal urban city sky. Luminous pollution of this magnitude is on the rise worldwide. In a 2010 article from the Ecology and Society Journal, Hölker and others stated the use of artificial lighting increases by 20% each year, depending on the region, and noted there is an urgent need for light pollution policies that surpass energy efficiency to include humans, animals and the environment.
