Definition: Thermal pollution is the degradation of water quality by any process that changes ambient water temperature.

Causes : A common cause of thermal pollution is the use of water as a coolant by power plants and industrial manufacturers. When water used as a coolant is returned to the natural environment at a higher temperature, the sudden change in temperature decreases oxygen supply and affects ecosystem composition.

Effects: The Effects of Thermal Pollution on Marine Life.Thermal pollution occurs when power plants and factories discharge hot or cold water into nearby rivers, lakes, streams, oceans or bays, causing rapidly changing water temperatures.

Solution:

1. Plant more shade trees.

Shade trees around waterways and coastal locations help to lower temperatures by blocking the sun’s rays and absorbing carbon emissions. This prevents the water from heating to abnormal temperatures. We could also achieve the same effect by not harvesting shade trees.

2. Reduce electrical consumption.

Because power plants are a major contributor to thermal pollution, one simple solution to implement is to use less power. This would require less water to be used as coolant, which would reduce the heated water being sent back to the same body of water from which it had been acquired.

3. Control temperatures in urban areas.

Another major source of thermal pollution is water runoff from hot concrete, asphalt, and similar surfaces. By taking another look at city planning and working to normalize these temperatures, we could help to reduce the harmful temperatures that occur during the hottest months of the year.

4. Look at no till farming options.

Another source of thermal pollution is soil erosion. When top soil goes away, it reduces the amount of filtering that the ground naturally provides. By changing our farming methods to a more sustainable no till method, we can still achieve similar yields while continuing to maintain the planet’s natural processes to reduce thermal pollution issues.

5. Use heated water as a power source.

Many homes use heated water as a source of power. It is currently processed through solar panels or a similar system, but we could also recycle the artificially heated water for power in other ways in a secondary process.

Thermal pollution cannot be overlooked as a potential threat to the environment. These solutions are just a few of the ways we can get started on the restoration process today.

Exercise 1:

Air pollution is measured by a number called the Air Quality Index (AQI), which ranges from 0-500, with anything over 150 considered “unhealthy.” The World Health Organization considers any reading above 100 to be hazardous and recommends that people avoid prolonged exposure. While Vietnamese cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have AHI readings around 100 or higher, many provinces have far worse levels of pollution. In some areas of the south, where there are large rubber plantations and coal mines, AQI numbers can surpass 500.

Some simple way to reduce air pollution

(Vài cách đơn giản để giảm thiểu ô nhiễm không khí)

1. Using public transports

(Sử dụng phương tiện công cộng)

2. Turn off the lights when not in use

(Tắt điện khi không sử dụng)

3. Recycle and reuse

(Tái sử dụng và tái chế)

4. Say no to plastic bags

(Nói không với túi nhựa)

5. Reduction of forest fires and smoking

(Giảm thiểu cháy rừng và hút thuốc)

6. Use of fans instead of air conditioner

(Sử dụng quạt thay vì điều hòa)

7. Use filters for chimneys

(Sử dụng tấm lọc cho ống khói)

8. Avoid usage of crackers

(Tránh sử dụng pháo ống)

9. Avoid using of products with chemicals

(Tránh sử dụng các sản phẩm chứa nhiều chất hóa học)

10. Implement afforestation

(Tiến hành trồng rừng)

Air pollution is a major change in the composition of the atmosphere, mainly from smoke, dust, soot, steam or air makes strange gas is not clean, there was a smell coming, reduced visibility, caused climate change, pathogenic for humans and creatures.

Air pollution caused more than 3 million people die prematurely every year, it threatens virtually all of the big city dwellers in the developing countries. According to Fox News 80% of cities in the world can not meet the standards of the World Health Organization (WHO) on air quality, which is mainly concentrated in poor countries. WHO said the level of urban air pollution worldwide has increased by 8% despite improvements in some areas. This leads to the risk of stroke, heart disease, lung cancer and a variety of respiratory problems.

Nowadays, pollution is a popular term with everyone in the world and air pollution is one type of pollution. The definition of air pollution is one such form that refers to the contamination of the air, irrespective of indoors or outside. A physical, biological or chemical alteration to the air in the atmosphere can be termed as pollution. There are some main reasons which cause air contamination such as burning of fossil fuels, agricultural activities, exhaust from factories and industries, mining operations, and indoor air pollution. Air pollution always has bad effects on our life. Harmful gases, dust, and smoke enter into the atmosphere and make it difficult for plants, animals and humans to survive. We also can see some examples of the result of air contamination which occurs around us as global warming, acid rain, and depletion of ozone layer. The effects of air pollution are alarming, so governments over the world should have suitable policies of protecting the environment, especially air quality to create a clean world for our generation in the future.

Noise pollution refers to the disturbing sound that may cause harm to human and animal life.

Sources of Noise Pollution: The indoor sources of Noise Pollution are loudly played music stereos, radio, televisions, grinding machines, etc. The outdoor sources of Noise Pollution commonly referred to as environmental noise comes from airplane, machines, trains, vehicles, industries, etc.

Effect on Human Health: It may affect the mind, health and behaviour. It may cause physically discomfort and temporary or permanent damage to hearing. It causes headache and irritability. Loud speakers not only disturb the student in their studies but also the peace of locality. It may cause deafness, stress and high-blood pressure.

Effect on Animal Health: Animals suffer badly due to noise pollution. At times, it can also lead to death. Noise has impact on the living pattern of the animals and it may push the rare species to extinction. Like humans, they also suffer from temporary or permanent disability of hearing.

Protection: Personal protection against noise can be achieved by covering our ears with a cap, turban or even by spreading out the palms of our hands in excessive noise situations.

Solution: Legislation and public co-operation are essential to check noise pollution. Nobody should be permitted to create noise in silent zones. Noise-producing traffic vehicles should be prevented from plying on the roads. Crackers that create extremely disturbing sound should be discouraged. Standards for noise control measures should be set up for industry and community. The existing ordinances and acts against dangerous form of environmental pollution should be revised from time to time depending upon the changing nature of the sources.

Air pollution is a cause of ill-health in human beings. In a lot of countries there are laws limiting the amount of smoke which factories can produce. Although there isn’t enough information on the effects of smoke in the atmosphere, doctors have proved that air pollution causes lung diseases.

The gases from the exhausts of cars have also increased air pollution in most cities. The lead in petrol produces a poisonous gas which often collects in busy streets surrounded by high buildings. Children who live in areas where there is a lot of lead in the atmosphere cannot think as quickly as other children and they are clumsy when they use their hands.

There are other long-term effects of pollution. If the gases in the atmosphere continue to increase, the earth’s climate may become warmer. A lot of the ice near the Poles may melt and may cause serious floods.
