provided will be too few and parking will become more difficult as a result.
Local hotel owners have welcomed the project, but the action group says that in general it will only
have a bad effect on the neighbourhood. According to one group member it will result in up to 4,000
people being around Layton seafront late at night. ‘A lot of old people and families live nearby,’ he
explained. A meeting is being held tonight to discuss the plans.

Will people still read books 100 years from now? A few years ago, many people would have said no. It seemed likely that computers and the Internet would replace books. Now, however, most experts think that books are here to stay.

There are a number of reasons why computers will not replace books entirely. One reason is that books on paper are much cheaper than computers. And books do not need a power source. You can read a book for as long as you want and wherever you want. You never have to worry about losing power. Also, many people feel more comfortable reading woeds in a book than reading woeds on a computer screen because it is less tiring to the eyes.

Will books in the future be exactly the same as the books you can buy today? The answer to that question is no. In the future, you may only need to buy one book. With this one book, you will be able to read novels, plays, and newspapers. It will look like today's books, but it will be electronic.

One of the people working on the book of the future is Professor joseph Jacobson from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Professor Jacobson's electronic book will have a small button on the side. Practice 2:

The Hudson River is one of the most significant rivers in America, though it is not the largest. It was named after Henry Hudson, an English explorer who charted the river for the Dutch East India Company. The Hudson goes for 315 miles, starting in the Adirondack Mountains in New York State. It enters the ocean around New York City.

Washington Irving, an American writer, was one of the first to write about the Hudson River. He lived in the Hudson River Valley and wrote about the unique characteristics of this area. He developed the first kind of American folklore and told a story of a man named Rip Van Winkle. Rip Van Winkle fell asleep one day while climbing the mountains around the Hudson River. He did not wake up for twenty years. When he finally woke up, America had become a free country.

The river has not only been written about by famous writers, but has had practical purposes as well. It was an important means of transportation as America developed. The Eric Canal was built to connect the river to Lake Erie, one of the nation’s great lakes. This canal allowed the many cities on the Great Lakes to get goods from Europe. The Hudson River Valley area was also good for building railroads. All in all, the Hudson River is an important river in America.

1. What would be the best title for this passage?

A. Washington Irving’s River C. A River of American Importance

2. Why does the author mention “Washington Irving*’ in paragraph 2?

A. To give an example of an American writer C. To explain why Rip Van Winkle did not wake up
