Family types vary in different countries and among different cultures. In Western, industrialized societies, the nuclear family ranks as the most common family type. It consists of a father, a mother and their children. But nuclear families exist together with many other types of family units. In the single-parent family, for example, a mother or a father heads the family alone. A blended family is formed when a divorced or widowed parent remarries. As divorce rates have risen, the number of single-parent and blended families has increased.

In many parts of the world, parents and children live together with other family members under the same roof. These complex families usually contain several generations of family members, including grandparents, parents and children. They may also include brothers or sisters and their families, uncles, aunts and cousins. Even when relatives do not live together, they still consider themselves members of the same extended family includes grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins.

III. Read the passage, and choose the correct answer A, B, C or D for each question.

The American family unit is in the process of change. In the first half of the 20th century, there were mainly two types of families: the extended and the nuclear. An extended family includes mother, father, children and some other relatives, living in the same house. A nuclear family is composed of just parents and children livingunder the same roof.

As the American economy had progressed from agricultural to industrial one, people were forced to move to different parts of the country to get good jobs. These jobs were mainly in the large cities. Now, in fact, three-quarters of Americans live in urban areas which occupy 2.5% of the national total land mass. Of the 118 million in the labour force, only 3 million still work on the farm.

Since moving for better jobs has often divided the extended family, the nuclear family became more popular. At present, 55% of the families in the US are nuclear families. But besides the two types of traditional family groupings, the family is now being expanded to include a variety of other living arrangements because of divorce. There is an increase in single-parent families, in which a father or mother lives with one or more children. Divorce has also led to blended families, which occur when previously married men and women marry again and combine the children from former marriage into a new family. There are also some couples who do not want to have children to form two-person childless families.

1. A nuclear family is one that .

A. consists of father, mother, and children living in the same house

B. relatives live with

C. there are only grandparents, parents and their children living in

D. is bigger than extended family

2. The expression “under the same roof” means

B. that has only father or mother living with children

C. in which there are no children

D. that there is only one couple living in with their newborn children

The Role of the Japanese Mother

The focus of the mother is her home and family, with particular attention to the rearing of children. While most Japanese believe that a woman's place is in the home, women make up almost 40 percent of the labor force. More than half of these women are married. Many mothers with small children work only part-time so they can be home when their children are not in school. The extra income earned by the mother is often used to meet the cost of their children's education.

Japanese mothers take the responsibility of their child's education and upbringing very seriously. They seldom confront their preschool children because they want to foster an intimate, dependent relationship. The purpose of this approach is to get the child to obey willingly with the mother’s wishes and to shape the child's behavior over a long period of time. The close nature of the mother-child relationship and the strong parentalcommitment help to provide a strong foundation for the child's entry into elementary school.

Mothers are involved directly in with the child's school. Each day a notebook is sent back and forth between mother and teacher remarking on the child's mood, behavior, health, and activities both in school and at home. Mothers attend PTA meetings usually twice a month and are involved with school committee's working on special projects such as gardening and hot lunch preparation. School is a very stressful and competitive process so the Japanese mother concentrates all her efforts on getting her children through so they can get accepted into the appropriate universities.

Task 1: Match a word in column A with its definition in column B, writing the answer in each blank.

About two hundred years ago man lived in greater harmony with his environment because industry was not much developed. Today the situation is quite (1) _________. People all over the world are worried about what is happening to the environment, because of modern industry and the need for more and more energy. Newspapers and magazines write (2) _________water pollution, air pollution and land pollution. Why is there so much (3) ________ about pollution. After all, people have been polluting the world around them for thousands and thousands of years. But in the past, there were not many people and (4) ________of room in the world so they could move to another place when their settlements became dirty.

Now, however, many parts of the world are (5)_________, people live in big cities and much of our waste, especially waste from factories, electric (6) _______ stations, the chemical industry and heavy industry is very dangerous. Fish die in the lakes, rivers and seas; forest trees die (7)_______. Much of this dangerous waste goes into the air and is carried by the wind for great distances. The earth is (8) ________home . We must take care of it for ourselves and for the next generations. This means (9) _________our environment clean.

The importance of this task is pointed out by ecologists, the scientists who study the (10)_______ between living things and the environment. However, each of us must do everything possible to keep the land, air and water clean.
III. Read the passage carefully and choose the best option for each sentence.

Most of us lead unhealthy lives: we spend far too much time sitting down. If, in addition, we are careless about our diets, our bodies soon become flabby and our systems sluggish. Then the guilt feelings start : “I must go on a diet”, “ I must try to lose weight” “ I must get more fresh air and exercise”, “I must stop smoking”, “I must try to keep fit” . There are some aspects of our unhealthy lives that we cannot avoid. I’m thinking of such features of modern urban life as pollution, noise, rushed meals and stress. But keeping fit is a way to minimize the effects of these evils.

The usual suggestion to a person who is looking for a way to keep fit is to take some sports. While it is true that every weekend you will find people playing football and hockey in the local park, they are outnumbered a hundred to one by the people who are simply watching them. It is an illusion to think that you will get fit by going to watch the football match every Saturday, unless you count the effort required to fight your way through the crowds to get to the best seats.

For those who do not particularly enjoy competitive sports – and it is especially difficult to do so if you are not good at them – there are such solitary activities as cycling, walking and swimming. What often happens, though, is that you do them in such a leisurely way, so slowly, that is doubtful if you are doing yourself much good, apart from the fact that you have at least managed to get up out of your armchair. Of course you can be very thorough about exercise, even fanatical. Many sports shops now sell frightening pieces of apparatus, chest-expanders and other mysterious gadgets of shiny spring steel, which, according to the advertisements, will bring you up to an Olympic standard of fitness, provided that you follow a rigorous and regular programme of exercises. Such programmes generally involve long periods of time bending these curious bits of metal into improbable shapes.

It all strikes me as utterly boring and also time-consuming. Somebody suggested recently that all such effort was pointless anyway because if you spend half an hour every day jogging round the local park, you will add to your life exactly the number of hours that you wasted doing the ‘jogging’ in the first place. The argument is false even if the facts are correct, but there is no doubt that exercise in itself can be boring.

Even after you have found a routine for keeping in shape, through sport or gymnastics or isometrics, you are still only half way to good health, because, according to the experts, you must also master the art of complete metal and physical relaxation. Now, this does not mean snoozing in the armchair or going dancing ( which is a good form of exercise in itself ) . It has to do with deep breathing , emptying your mind of all thoughts, meditation, and so on.

Yoga, as practiced in the West, is the most widely known and popular of the systems for achieving the necessary state of relaxation. Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to learn a lot of strange words or become a Buddhist in order to benefit from Yoga. It seems ironical, though, that as our lives have improved in a material sense, we have found it increasingly necessary to go back to forms of activity – physical effort on the one hand, and relaxation on the other – which were the natural way of life of our forefathers.

People have come to settle in Britain for centuries from many parts of the world. Some came to avoid political or religious persecution, and others came to find a better way of life or an escape from poverty. The Irish has long made home in Britain. Many Jewish refugees started their new life in the country at the end of the nineteenth century. In 1930s and after the World War II a large number of people from other European countries came to live there. There also have been many people who came from some countries in Asia. According to the results of a recent survey the non-white population of Great Britain was about 2.4 million, 4.5% the total population. Only half of them were born in Britain. Most of the non-white refugees live in the poorest areas of the cities or in the countryside, where they can only get the worst services and low living standards. All they have to suffer is due to racial discrimination. Although progress has undoubtedly made over the last twenty years in several areas, life is not really better to many non-white refugees. However, with their effort, many individuals have got success in their careers and in public life. The proportion of ethnic minority workers in professional and managerial jobs has increased.

I know that it is my job to make sure that everything goes well for the tourists and I feel I work hard for the company. I cannot be blamed for last week; I met a group at the airport and took them to the coach. The coach driver was a bit annoyed because the flight was late. But it wasn't far to the hotel and everyone was looking forward to their dinner. We hadn't used the Hotel Riviera before but our normal one had a conference in it so it was fully booked. When I announced our arrival at the reception desk, they said they were full. I had booked rooms for the group but the manager said they were cancelled by phone a few days before. He insisted that he recognised my voice and that I had made the phone call. We had a bit of an argument but they obviously didn't have enough rooms. In the end, the manager phoned hotels in the town and found rooms for everyone but in four different hotels. By this time, the coach had

gone, so we had to get taxis and some of the tourists started to get very angry with me. I still don't know who made that phone call but it definitely wasn't me.

Câu 34: Why weren't any rooms available at the Hotel Riviera?

A. Someone had forgotten to book them

B. A conference was taking place there.

C. Someone had said they were not needed

D. There were more people in the group than expected.

Câu 35: What happened in the end?

A. The tourists couldn't stay together. B. The writer called the coach driver back.

C. The writer found other hotels with rooms. D. The tourists got angry with the hotel manager.

Câu 36: What is the writer trying to do?

A. complain B. explain C. argue D. apologise

Câu 37: Which of the following diaries was written by one of the tourists?

A. The hotel we were taken to wasn't good enough so we asked to change to a different one.

B. Someone had made a mistake with our hotel booking and the hotel had given our rooms to other people.

C. The coach driver took us to the wrong hotel and they knew nothing about us.

D. We got to the airport and had to wait for the coach. So it was really late when we got to the hotel.

Câu 38: Who was the text written to?

A. the coach company
