                                MAKE BANANAS FAIR

Bananas are the most popular fruit in the world. British people love eating bananas, but they don’t grow in the UK and have to be transported. So how it is possible that a banana only costs eleven pence in supermarkets?

1. The reason is that the farmers often get very little because the companies who buy bananas want to make big profits. Life isn’t easy on a banana plantation. The farmers work long hours and can get harmed by dangerous pesticides.

2. Fairtrade is an international movement that tries to help farmers and workers in developing countries. Fairtrade products include items like bananas, coffee, sugar, cocoa and rice. When you buy a product with Fairtrade label, you know the farmers received a fair price and worked in good conditions.

3. Foncho, a Fairtrade banana farmer in Colombia who belongs to a farmers’ co-operative. 'We experienced very difficult times when we weren’t in Fairtrade,’ he says. Today, as a Fairtrade farmer, he gets a minimum price for his bananas and his co-operative also gets the Fairtrade premium. This means he can build his family a house and support them.

4. Therefore, next time you are shopping in the supermarket, look for the Fairtrade label. If enough people choose to buy Fairtrade goods, more companies will pay the farmers a fair price.

Fairtrade is an international movement that aims to help farmers and workers in developing countries by ensuring they receive fair prices for their products and work in good conditions. It is a system that guarantees a minimum price for products like bananas, coffee, sugar, cocoa, and rice. When consumers buy a product with the Fairtrade label, they can be confident that the farmers received a fair price for their goods and worked in favorable conditions. The Fairtrade premium also provides additional support to farmers and their communities. By choosing to buy Fairtrade goods, consumers can contribute to creating a market where more companies pay farmers a fair price.

Chris Dancy loves technology. A few years ago, he noticed that he had very little information about his habits, health and lifestyle, and he wanted to lose some weight. So he bought some gadgets that could collect this information and help him understand himself better. Now he is connected to 700 sensors that record every detail of his life. He monitors what he eats and drinks, how long he sleeps, how much he spends, his mood... even the activity of his dogs! Few, if any, people collect as much data about themselves as Chris.

Most of his gadgets are attached to him. He wears gadgets on both arms, a heart rate monitor and a device that counts calories. He has a smartwatch too, which he can wear on either wrist. His house and car are also full of gadgets. Every one of them sends data to his computer, and at the end of each day Chris spends a little time analysing it. The smartwatch is the only gadget he wears all the time. He doesn't wear all of his gadgets 24/7, but he has so many systems that automatically track his activity that there aren't any days when there is no monitoring at all.

Make Your Vacation More Interesting

Aziz Abu Sarah has a travel company and often gives advice to tourists. Here he answers the question: “How can a vacation be more interesting?”

Don't plan everything

Tourists often study maps and plan everything before they go on vacation. It's fun to go sightseeing, but sometimes it's interesting to leave the map at the hotel. When I was in Tokyo for the first time, I traveled to the suburbs. Two hours later, I was singing karaoke and dancing with local people.

Try the local food

Eating local food always makes a vacation more interesting. Go to food markets where local people sell fresh food that they grew or cooked. You can learn more about their food and culture. It's much more interesting than going to a supermarket - and the food is better!

Find out where local people go

When you arrive in a new place, find out about festivals and events. Local magazines and posters have information about art galleries and live music. If you like sports, find out where people play. When I was in Tunisia, I played soccer on the beach with a group of local men.

Ask for advice and suggestions

All around the world, people are always happy to give advice. Don't always use the guidebook or the Internet. Ask local people for suggestions on where to go or where to eat. Once, in Curitiba, Brazil, I asked a local group where I should have dinner in the city. They invited me for dinner and I am still friends with them!

Pride Through Fashion

1. If you visit the Andes regions of Bolivia, Peru, or Chile, you might see women wearing unique clothing: bowler hats, handmade shawis, and lots of jewelry. This is the fashion of Aymaran women. The Aymara are an indigenous group of people from the Andes mountains and Aymaran women's clothing is very different. Locally, these women are called “cholitas” with their “chola” fashion.

2. In the past, it was difficult for Aymaran women to get good jobs or an education. They often lived in poorer parts of the cities. But in modern Bolivia, this is changing. More and more Aymaran women go to school. They often get well-paid jobs, so they now have money to spend on more expensive clothes. When French photographer Delphine Blast visited La Paz, the capital of Bolivia she loved the style of the cholitas, so she photographed some of these fashionably dressed women.

3. Eliana Paco Paredes is an Aymaran fashion designer, and she says that chola clothes are in fashion at the moment. She has a store in La Paz and sells the clothes to local people, and also internationally. “We dress many people in Peru, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, and some products we make go to Spain and Italy.” Recently, Eliana showed her clothes at New York's Fashion Week, where they were very popular. “We're getting people to learn about what this clothing is, ... and many women outside of Bolivia want to wear these outfits.”

Niềm Tự Hào Thông Qua Thời Trang

PART NINE
For the question 71-75, read the following article and circle the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
Persons sixty-five years and over already represent 13 percent of the total population inAmerica, and by 2025 there will be 59 million elderly Americans, representing 21 percent of thepopulation of the United States. Furthermore, the percentage of the population over age eighty-five will increase from about 1 percent currently to 5 percent in 2050. This population trend has been referred to as the graying of America. To explain this demographic change, we must look at three factor. Fertility, mortality, and immigration in large part influence all demographic trends. The large number of children born after World War II will increase the pool of elderly between 2010 and 2030. The “baby boom” will become the “senior boom” sixty-five years later. Although the birth rate is the most dramatic factor, the decline in the death rate is also significant. Medical advances have influenced life expectancy. For example, whereas only 40 percent of those Americans born in 1900 had a life expectancy of sixty-five, today 80 percent are expected to reach the classic retirement age. The average male life span, now 71.4 years, is expected to increase to 73.3 by 2015. Among females, the life span is projected to increase from the current 78.3 years to 81.3 years by 2015. In addition, immigration has
contributed to the increasing number of elderly. After World War I, a massive immigration of young adults of child-bearing age occurred. Because the birth rates among this specialized population were very high, their children, now among the elderly, are a significant segment of the older population.
71. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

B.a general directionD.an increase in influence

7
74. The word “their” in the second paragraph refers to ________.

A.FemaleB.ElderlyC.young adultsD.birth rate

75. The author mentions all of the following as factors that have influenced population trends
EXCEPT ________.

A.the “baby boom” after World War II
B.the immigration after World War I
C.the improvements in health care
D.the decline in the birth rate among young Americans
