I. Read the following text and answer the questions below.

Mars is a planet. It is the fourth planet from the sun. It is the next planet beyond Earth. Mars is more than 142 million miles from the sun. The planet is about one-sixth the size of Earth. Mars is known as the Red Planet. It gets its red colour from the iron in its soil. Mars has two small moons. Their names are Phobos and Deimos.

Mars is very cold. The average temperature on Mars is minus 80 degrees Fahrenheit - way below freezing!

Mars is rocky with canyons, volcanoes and craters all over it. Red dust covers almost all of Mars. It has clouds and wind, just as Earth does. Sometimes the wind blows the red dust into a dust storm. Tiny dust storms can look like tornados, and large ones can cover the whole planet!

Mars has about one-third the gravity of Earth. A rock dropped on Mars would fall slower than a rock dropped on Earth. Things weigh less on Mars than they weigh on Earth. A person who weighs 100 pounds on Earth would only weigh about 37 pounds on Mars because of less gravity.

PART 4. Questions 21-25. Read the text and questuions below. For each question, mark the correct letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet.

AT HOME IN VENICE BY FRANCESCO DA MOSTO

I was born in Venice, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Italy, and studied architecture at university there. Though I have also spent time away, I have always come back because it's my home. In Venice, there are no roads, only canals, so you have to get around on foot or by boat. I live on a canal in the Rialto area in a house that was built 1588 for the Multi family, who were merchants in the silk trade. In the mid-eighteenth century, it was home to the Vezzi family, who made things like plates and bowls in fine china and became rich sending these around the world. These merchants' houses in Venice are like palaces. Their owners had to have space to show off their foods, but the building also had to be an office, a factory, a store and a home. My house came into our family in 1919, when it was bought by my grandfather. He died before I was born but he was the director of a museum where I often do research on old documents. On some of these, I’ve seen notes in his handwriting, so, in a strange way, I met him through these documents.

Sadly, the population of Venice has dropped from120, 000 in the 1950s to about 60,000 now. This doesn't include the thousands of tourists who come to visit. I welcome the tourists but unless something is done to stop everyday shops like bakeries and chemists from disappearing, the city will die. I want people who love the city to come here to live and work and give Venice back a life that is not just about tourism.

A. His grandfather taught him how to study documents.

B. He didn’t find his grandfather's handwriting easy to read.

C. He wasn’t able to get to know his grandfather personally.

24. What is the writer's attitude to Venice today?

A. He hopes tourists al stop waiting the city.

B. He would like people to get jobs working with tourists.

C. He believes the city would benefit from having fewer inhabitants.

25. What might the writer say about his house?

C. We don't know who lived in the house before 1588 but it was owned by merchants from then until the eighteenth century.

D. The house was made bigger in the mid-eighteenth century because the owner wanted it to look like a palace.

I. Read and do the tasks below.

The generation gap, which refers to a broad difference between one generation and another, especially between young people and their parents, usually leads to numerous conflicts. Such family conflicts can seriously threaten the relationship between parents and children at times.

It goes without saying that, however old their children are, parents still regard them as small kids and keep in mind that their offspring are too young to protect themselves cautiously or have wise choices. Therefore, they tend to make a great attempt to help their children to discover the outside world. Nevertheless, they forget that as children grow up, they want to be more independent and develop their own identity by creating their own opinions, thoughts, styles and values about life.

One common issue that drives conflicts is the clothes of teenagers. While teens are keen on wearing fashionable clothes which try to catch up with the youth trends, parents who value traditional clothes believe that those kinds of attire violate the rules and the norms of the society. It becomes worse when the expensive brand name clothes teens choose seem to be beyond the financial capacity of parents.

Another reason contributing to conflicts is the interest in choosing a career path or education between parents and teenagers. Young people are told that they have the world at their feet and that dazzling future opportunities are just waiting for them to seize. However, their parents try to impose their choices of university or career on them regardless of their children's preference.

Indeed, conflicts between parents and children are the everlasting family phenomena. It seems that the best way to solve the matter is open communication to create mutual trust and understanding.

Task 1. Decide whether the following statements are True, False or Not Given.

1. According to the passage, the relationship between parents and children is

not easily destroyed by the family conflicts.

2. As children get older, parents let them live on their own way and do what

they are interested in.

3. Teenagers try to please their parents by wearing traditional clothes.

4. Parents want children to follow their wishes in deciding the education and

future jobs.

5. Some parents indulge their children with expensive brand name clothes.

6. In order to bridge the gap between the old generation and the younger one,

open communication to promote mutual understanding is the vital key.

                                                        Rhino farming

The South African White Rhino could become extinct in the wild in the next two decades. They were (1) ________________ extinct once before, at the end of the nineteenth century, but were brought back from the brink of extinction by successful conservation efforts. The rhino is hunted for its horn, and poaching is by far the (2)________________ threat to its existence. In many Asian countries, powdered rhino horn is believed to treat anything from fevers to cancer, although there is (3) ________________ scientific evidence whatsoever to support these claims. Now there are calls to manage rhinos under farmed conditions and legalize the trade in one of the (4)  ________________ valuable animal products on earth. There are plenty of supporters who are only (5) ________________ eager to adopt this method of sustainable use, which involves sedating rhinos and then removing their horns, a practice not nearly (6)  ________________ inhumane as killing such truly magnificent creatures for their horns. The (7) ________________, like a nail, grows back so that it would be theoretically (8) ________________ to 'harvest.' rhino horn several times from a single animal. But is it ethically correct to use this creature to support a market in quack medicine?
