Even hundreds of years ago, children were taught to behave responsibly. They learnt to respect seniority. When they passed an object to another person, they had to use both hands. When they entered a room, they had to bow and greet the oldest person first. Boys learnt to work hard to support their families. Girls learnt to do housework, and to take care of others. Loyalty and honesty were highly appreciated. When they made a mistake, they would not let another person be punished for it. That would be cowardly and mean. They were taught that families were strong, and everybody should stick together in adversity. Fortunately, many of these values have been well preserved. They have contributed to making the unique Vietnamese culture, and strengthening our society. 1. Good manners are considered valuable to both individuals and the community as a whole. 2. Manners are learned and taught, and passed down from generation to generation. 3.Children were taught responsible behavior, such as respecting seniority and using both hands to pass objects. 4. Boys were taught to work hard and girls were taught housework and caring for others. 5. Loyalty, honesty, and the importance of family were highly invalued and have contributed to Vietnamese culture and society.

Education was of primary importance to the English colonists and was conducted at home as well as in established schools. Regardless of geographic location or finances, most Americans learned to read and compute numbers. For many, the Bible and the other religicus usually made them good primers. Many families owned one or more of Shakespear’s works, a copy of John Bunyan’s classic “A Pilgrim’s Progress”, and sometimes collections of English literary essays, poems, or historical speeches.

In 1647 the Massachusetts School Law required every town of at least 50 household to maintain a grammar school. The law was the first to mandate public education in America. In the middle colonies at the time, school were often dependent on religious societis, such as the Quakers and other private organizations. In the South, families employed private tutors or relied on the clergy to conduct education. At the outset, most elementary schools were for boy, but schools for girls were establishes in the eighteen century in most cities and large towns. In spite of the informal atmosphere of most American schools, the literacy rate in the colonies of mid-eighteenth century America was equal to or higher than that in most European countries.

Before the American Revolution, nine colleges had been founded, including Harvard, Willia and Mary, Yale; the College of New Jersey ( now Princeton ), Brown, Rutgers, Dartmouth, and King College ( later Columbia University ). By 1720 the natural sciences and modern language were being taught, as well as coures in practical subjects such as machanics and agriculture. At the end of the 18th century, medical schools were estabished at the College of Philadelphia and at King’s College

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct word for each of the blanks.

Marriage nowadays is a choice people make on their own, but this has not always been the case in society. Thousands of years ago, the average lifespan was shorter than it is today. A man usually lived until he was about 40 years old, while women died even sooner because of childbirth. There were many wars and illnesses, and people had to protect themselves by having more children while they were still young. The parents lived through their children.

Marriage was not so much a romantic love story but a business transaction, or deal. Most marriages were arranged between parents while their children were still very young. It was the custom that the fathers made the decision on whom their children were going to marry. The mothers had little say in it since they rarely made any decisions outside the household. The fathers would meet to arrange the wedding date and the money given for the bride on her wedding date. The more money and land a girl had, the more chances she had to marry well. Therefore, it was important that her father choose the bridegroom very well. Usually, it was someone who came from a good family or who was rich too. It was very unlikely that people married outside their social class. A few well-off and rich merchants got to marry poorer noblewomen and became King’s business advisors. In a way, poor peasants had an easier choice as it was less important whom they married.

The practice of arranged marriage is still common in some countries in the Middle East, such as India or Pakistan. Here, social classes are still strongly divided and very well-kept. Often, however, arranged marriages are a sign that people do not want to let go of the past, which gives them comfort and security in an ever-changing world.

What does the passage mainly discuss?

A. Marriage as a business transaction today.

B. Mothers' roles in their children's marriage.

C. Marriage practices in modem society.
