Cấu trúc câu sử dụng in order to và so as to
1. Khi mục đích của hành động hướng tới chính chủ thể của hành động được nêu ở phía trước

S + V + in order/so as + (not) + to + V ….

Tình huống 1: I worked hard. I wanted to pass the test. (Tôi học hành chăm chỉ. Tôi muốn đỗ kỳ thi.)
=> I worked hard so as to pass the test. (Tôi học hành chăm chỉ để đỗ kỳ thi.)
Tình huống 2: I worked hard. I didn’t want to fail the test. (Tôi học hành chăm chỉ. Tôi không muốn trượt kỳ thi.)
=> I worked hard in order not to fail the test. (Tôi học hành chăm chỉ để không trượt kỳ thi.)

II Các sd in order và so as

So as + nguyên mẫu ám chỉ rằng chủ từ muốn hành động xảy ra. Do đó In order thông dụng hơn.

– In order và So as được dùng.

+ Với một nguyên mẫu phủ định để diễn đạt mục đích phủ định:

He left his gun outside in order/so as not to frighten us.

Anh ta để cây súng ở ngoài để không làm cho chúng tôi sợ.

+ Với to be và to have:

She left work early in order/so as to be at home when he arrived.

Cô rời sở sớm để có mặt tại nhà khi anh ấy đến.

She gave up work in order/so as to have more time with the children.

Cô ấy thôi việc để có nhiều thời giờ hơn cho lũ trẻ.

+ Khi mục đích ít tức thời hơn.

He is studying mathematics in order/so as to qualify for a better job.

Anh ta đang học toán để bồi dưỡng chuyên môn cho một việc làm tốt hơn.

She learnt typing in order to help her husband with his work.

Cô ấy học đánh máy để giúp việc cho chồng.

+ Đôi khi trong các câu dài hơn, để nhấn mạnh rằng nguyên mẫu trình bày mục đích.

Để cho ông chủ thấy anh ta là một công nhân cẩn thận cỡ nào, anh ta mõi ra thêm các sơ hở phụ qua các con số.

+ In order (chứ không có So as) được dùng để nhấn mạnh rằng chủ từ đã có sẵn mục đích trong đầu

He bought diamonds when he was in Amsterdam – That wasn’t surprising. He went to Amsterdam in order to buy diamonds.

Anh ta mua kim cương khi anh ta ở Amsterdam đấy. – Điều đó không đáng ngạc nhiên. Anh ấy đếm Amsterdam để mua kim cương đó mà.

+ Tuy nhiên ta cũng có thể diễn đạt ý này bằng cách nhấn ở động từ thứ nhất và lược bỏ in order.

He went to Amsterdam to buy diamonds.

Anh ấy đi Amsterdam để mua kim cương.

* Nguyên mẫu + danh từ + giới từ

I want a case to keep my records in.

Tôi muốn có một cái va li để đựng giấy tờ.

I need a corkscrew to open this bottle with.

Tôi cần một cái mở nút để về mở cái chai này.

* Lưu ý: ta đang nói về mục đích cụ thể. Đối với một mục đích tổng quát ta dùng for + danh động từ.

This is a case for keeping records in.

Đây là cái cặp để đựng giấy tờ.

A corkscrew is a tool for opening bottles.

Cái mở nút là một dụng cụ để mở nút chai.

S + V + in order + for O + (not) + to + V ….

Tình huống: She works hard. She wants her kid to have a better life. (Cô ấy làm việc chăm chỉ. Cô ấy muốn con mình có cuộc sống tốt hơn.)
=> She works hard in order for her kid to have a better life. (Cô ấy làm việc chăm chỉ để con cô ấy có cuộc sống tốt hơn.)
