HOBBIES IN THE PAST

Like fashion, hobbies change with the times. In our days, a lot of hobbies use technology: we take digital photos and post them online and children play computer games. But what did people use to do before this technology? Let's take a took at some hobbies that were popular more than 100 years ago.

Many of the sports that we play today were popular in the past, too. Football became popular and had rules for the first time in the 19th century. Many football clubs were started by employers, so that workers could play and stay fit. Football was a men sports but both men and woman played other sports, like tennis and croquet. Unfortunately, the long skirts worn at that time didn’t help women with their games at all.

Many girls and women spent their spare times doing sewing and embroidery. They used a needle and thread to make tiny stitches on a piece of fabric. They made clothes and accessories such as scarves and gloves. They created beautiful pictures of flowers, birds and other patterns. They also used to embroider cushions, tablecloths and rugs.

Girl in the 19th century used to play with dolls and doll’s houses. At that time, toys were handmade. The doll’s heads were often made of china and the bodies were made wood. Rocking horses were also very popular. They were made of wood and their tails were made of real horsehair. Boys used to play with toys trains and railways.

Finally, people in the 19th century love nature, so one popular hobby was collecting and drawing butterfiles. People used to catch butterflies in nets and fix them on special boards with pins. They used to draw pictures that showed all the details and colours of the beautiful insects.

Past or present, hobbies are a great way to pass the time. They help us show our creativity and used our imagination.

0.     Children used to play computer games.

1.     Football had rules for the first time.

2.     Only men played tennis.

3.     Women and girls used to make toys.

4.     Dolls were made of plastic.

5.     People used to take photos of butterflies.

MY HOBBY

My name is Peter. My hobby is reading. I spend hours reading books. There are always interesting stories to read and things to learn. My dad read to me before going to bed when I was a little boy. The stories were full of witches, fairies, princes, princesses, … and other fascinating characters. I liked to imagine that I was the knight who saved the princess locked in a tower.

I prefer other types of stories now because I’m older. I particularly enjoy reading action and adventure stories. It’s fun to believe that I’m the hero who fights the bad guys! And I’m also interested in real life stories because they make me think and imagine my reactions to many different situations in life. I think reading is a really interesting and exciting experience!

1. Peter likes reading books.

2.His mother read fairy stories to him before bedtime.

3.He imagined that he saved a princess from a tower.

4.He prefers action, adventure and real life stories when he grows up

5.He doesn’t like fairy stories any more.

This week’s documentary in the Extraordinary People series is about Stephen Wiltshire. In the programme, we see Stephen’s panoramic drawing of the centre of London. It’s four meters long, and it’s remarkable. All the building are in the right place. And every detail is correct. The number of floors in the tall building is correct, too. But the most incredible about the drawing is that Stephen drew it from memory, without photos or notes.

Stephen’s story is remarkable, too. When he was three, doctors discovered that he was autistic. He couldn’t speak, and he was often frustrated and angry. His parents saw that he was only happy with a pencil in his hand. His talent became obvious at the age of six when he drew a picture of Selfridges, the famous department store.

At his school for special needs children, they used his love of drawing to help him speak. His teacher took away his paper. ‘Paper!’ he shouted. It was his first word.
