Mẹ tôi là bài văn dưới dạng một bức thư của nhà văn Ét-môn-đô dơ A-mi-xi (I-ta-li-a). Thư của người bố gửi cho con trai là En-ri-cô. En-ri-cô đã ghi lại trong một trang nhật kí đề ngày "Thứ năm, ngày 10 tháng 11". Chỉ một lá thư ngắn ngủi mà chứa đựng bao nhiêu nỗi niềm, bao nhiêu tâm trạng. Đọc bài văn, lá thư của người bố gửi cho con, chúng ta hiểu và thấm thìa bao nhiêu bài học vể tình cảm gia đình, nhất là về thái độ ứng xử của con cái đối với mẹ, cha.
Bài văn kể lại câu chuyện khi cô giáo đến thăm, En-ri-cô nói với mẹ đã "nhỡ thốt ra một lời thiếu lễ độ". Người cha đã "để ý" đến điều đó và ông vô cùng tức giận. Ngay ở phần đầu bức thư, ông đã răn đe : "Việc như thế không bao giờ con dược tái phạm nữa". Rồi ông bày tỏ tâm trạng : "Sự hỗn láo của con như một nhát dao đâm vào tim bố vậy". Nỗi đau tinh thần - sự buồn bã và tức giận - được ví với một tình huống khốc liệt: "nhát dao đâm vào tim", chứng tỏ nỗi lòng người cha vô cùng đau đớn, vừa buồn vừa giận con, vừa xót xa, thất vọng vì đứa con đã không xứng với tình yêu và niềm trông đợi của ông. Trái tim ông như rỉ máu. Ông đau đớn tưởng chừng không sống nổi. Nhưng người cha ấy vẫn cố giữ bình tĩnh, giảng giải cho con điều hay, lẽ phải. Qua lời thư của ông, chúng ta hiểu mẹ của En-ri-cô rất mực yêu thương con : "cách đây mấy năm, mẹ đã phải thức suốt đêm, cúi mình trên chiếc nôi trông chừng hơi thở hổn hển của con, quằn quại vì nỗi lo sợ, khóc nức nở khi nghĩ rằng có thể mất con...! Người mẹ sẵn sàng bỏ hết một năm hạnh phúc để tránh cho con một giờ đau đớn, người mẹ có thể đi ăn xin để nuôi con, có thể hi sinh tính mạng để cứu sống con !". Rõ ràng, mẹ của En-ri-cô cũng như bao người mẹ khác trên thế gian này đã yêu thương, chăm sóc nuôi dạy con cái bằng tất cả tấm lòng, sức lực, hi sinh tất cả hạnh phúc và cuộc sống của mình cho con cái. Tinh mẫu tử của con người thật thiêng liêng, cao cả biết nhường nào. Vì thế, sau những dòng thư vừa kể chuyện vừa ngợi ca tình yêu của người mẹ với En-ri-cô, bố của chú bé đã phân tích sâu sắc mối quan hệ ruột thịt, gắn bó sâu nặng giữa hai mẹ con En-ri-cô : "Trong đời, con có thể trải qua những ngày buồn thảm, nhưng ngày buồn thảm nhất tất sẽ là ngày mà con mất mẹ. Khi đã khôn lớn..., có thể có lúc con sẽ mong ước thiết tha được nghe lại tiếng nói của mẹ, được mẹ dang tay ra đón vào lòng. Dù có lớn khôn, khoẻ mạnh thế nào đi chăng nữa, con sẽ vẫn tự thấy mình chí là một đứa trẻ tội nghiệp, yếu đuối và không được chở che...". Người cha của En-ri-cô đã dự cảm, giả định bao tình huống để khẳng định một chân lí, một quy luật muôn đời rằng tình mẹ con, sự gắn bó giữa mẹ và con vô cùng khăng khít, bén vững mãi mãi trong thời gian và suốt cuộc đời con người. Thật düng như lời một bài hát quen thuộc mà tuổi trẻ Việt Nam ta thường hát : "Cha mẹ là lá chắn, che chờ suốt đời con...". Công lao nuôi nấng, dạy dỗ cũng như tình cảm yêu thương của cha mẹ, trước nhất là người mẹ đối với con cái thật không bút nào tả xiết được. Vì thế, bố của En-ri-cô đã nghiêm khắc cảnh tỉnh lỗi lầm của cậu con trai bằng những lời thật da diết : "Con sẽ cay đắng khi nhớ lại những lúc đã làm cho mẹ đau lòng... Lương tâm con sẽ không một phút nào yên tĩnh...". Thậm chí ông nói cực đoan rằng : "Bố rất yêu con, En-ri-cô ạ,... nhưng thà rằng bố không có con, còn hơn là thấy con bội bạc với mẹ...". Lời thư nhẹ nhàng mà tha thiết, không quát tháo, không mắng mỏ, nhưng đọc lên nghe đau nhói cả cõi lòng. Đọc những lời này, chắc cậu bé học sinh người I-ta-li-a ấy hối hận vô cùng. Còn chúng ta, trong đời, ai chẳng đã một lần phạm lỗi khiến mẹ phiền lòng, cha tức giận, thì khi đọc những lời văn này, chắc cũng thấy nôn nao, ân hận. Chúng ta thử đoán xem, điểu gì đã khiến cho En-ri-cồ "xúc động vô cùng" khi đọc thư của bố ? Có phải vì bố đã gợi lại những kỉ niệm đẹp giữa mẹ và chú bé ? Hay vì thái độ kiên quyết và nghiêm khắc của bố ? Hay cũng còn là vì những lời nói chân tình, xuất phát từ tình yêu, từ lòng mong muốn đứa con mau chóng trưởng thành,... của người bố gửi tới con ? Hay còn vì những lí do nào khác nữa ? Điều thú vị là những điều răn dạy quý báu ấy người bố của En-ri-cô không trực tiếp nói bằng lời mà lại nói qua một bức thư. Chúng ta có thể hiểu thế này dược chăng : Tình cảm sâu sắc thường tế nhị và kín đáo, nhiều khi không thể nói trực tiếp được. Nói bằng văn bản, ý tứ được chi tiết hơn, sự sắp xếp được chặt chẽ hơn. Hơn nữa, viết thư tức là chỉ nói riêng cho người mắc lỗi biết, vừa giữ được sự kín đáo tế nhị vừa không làm người mắc lỗi mất đi lòng tự trọng. Đây cũng là bài học về cách ứng xử trong cuộc sống gia đình cũng như trong nhà trường và xã hội. Cuối lá thư, bố của En-ri-cô khuyên con trai làm những việc thiết thực để nhận lỗi, rồi xin lỗi mẹ. Chắc rằng đọc xong lá thư của bố, chủ bé đã nhận ra lỗi lầm của mình và đã làm theo lời khuyên của bố.
