Quy tắc thêm đuôi s/ es:
- Động từ không có dấu hiệu đặc biệt: Thêm -s vào sau động từ
Ví dụ: get - gets, take - takes

- Động từ kết thúc bằng các chữ cái -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, -o: Thêm -es
Ví dụ: miss - misses, wash - washes, watch - watches, mix - mixes, do - does

- Động từ kết thúc bằng một phụ âm và -y: Bỏ -y và thêm -ies
Ví dụ: study - studies

- Động từ kết thúc bằng một nguyên âm và -y: Thêm -s vào sau động từ
Ví dụ: play - plays

Trước hết, các bạn nên nhớ: Ta thêm -S hoặc -ES vào từ loại nào trong tiếng Anh? 

1. Động từ (verb): động từ được thêm -S/-ES sẽ trở thành động từ số ít (singular verb).

2. Danh từ (noun): danh từ được thêm -S/-ES sẽ trở thành danh từ số nhiều (plural noun).

Trong bài viết này An Nam chủ yếu tập trung vào cách thêm -S/-ES vào động từ - còn danh từ các bạn áp dụng tương tự.

I. Quy tắc chung:

-  Ta thêm “S” một cách bình thường vào sau các động từ ở ngôi thứ 3 số ít trong thì hiện tại đơn khi chủ ngữ: (He, she, it, Nam, Hanoi, the cat…). Ví dụ: lives, learns, swims, ...

II. Quy tắc riêng: Khi gặp vài trường hợp sau đây thì bạn phải lưu ý:

 1. Thêm “ES” đối với các động từ tận cùng bằng; S, (O), CH, X, SH, Z.

* Để dễ nhớ các bạn nên đọc câu này: Sao Ông  Chạy Xe SH Zậy.

Ex: go - goes               fix - fixes                     miss - misses                     watch - watches

2. Nếu động từ tận cùng bằng Y, trước Y là phụ âm, ta đổi Y thành I rồi thêm -ES.

Ex: study - studies                                          carry - carries

* Nhưng: say/sei/- says/sez/                             obey - obeys

- Trong 2 từ trên trước Y là nguyên âm (5 nguyên âm ểu oải) nên thêm -S bình thường.
