Banh chung has long been a traditional cake of the Vietnamese people to express the gratitude of children and grandchildren to their ancestors and the land. Legend has it that in the sixth reign of King Hung Vuong, after defeating the An invaders, the king intended to pass the throne to his son. On the occasion of the beginning of spring, King Hung gathered his princes and asked them to present to their father what they considered most precious to worship on their ancestors' altar on the first day of spring. The princes raced to find delicious and strange things to offer to their father, with the hope that their father would inherit the throne. Meanwhile, Hung Vuong's eighteenth son, Lang Lieu, has a gentle personality and lives close to people.
