Environmental Pollution

Environmental pollution is a term that refers to all the ways by which man pollutes his surroundings. Man dirties the air with gases and smokes, (1) _______ the water with chemicals and other substances, and damages the soil with (2) _______ many fertilizers and pesticides. Man also pollutes his surroundings in various (3) _______ ways. For example, people ruin the natural beauty by scattering junk and litter on the land and in the water. They operate machines and motor vehicles that fill the air with disturbing noise. Badly polluted air can cause illness, and (4) _______ death. Polluted water kills fish and other marine life. Pollution of the soil reduces the amount (5) _______ land that is available for growing food.

The terraced rice fields in Mu Cang Chai are a stunning sight as they wind down the mountains. These fields are not only a(n) (1) _______ wonder but also play an important role in the culture of the local Hmong people (2) _______ live in this remote area.

Mu Cang Chai's rice terraces are a national treasure, celebrated annually at the rice fields festival with traditional dances, music, goat fights, and local markets. These activities help people learn about the traditions of the Hmong and (3) _______ in the region.

1. The Everglades are a well-known natural area with unique features. They have freshwater ponds, grassy prairies, and sawgrass marshes that are home to many plants and animals. Some of these species are endangered and need protection.

2. For example, the Florida Panther, one of the rarest animals in the world, lives in the Everglades. Other unique animals found here include the American Crocodile, Wood Stork, and West Indian Manatee. The Everglades are protected by the National Park and the state of Florida, working together to save this unique ecosystem.

3. However, the Burmese Python is creating serious problems. These pythons, likely released by pet owners, have spread across the Everglades. They are eating local animals and disrupting the balance of nature. Florida has prohibited pythons as pets as a result to protect its ecosystem.

The Changing Role of Women in Society

1. The greatest recent social changes have been in the lives of women. During the twentieth century, there has been a remarkable shortening of the proportion of a woman's life spent in caring for children. A woman marrying at the end of the nineteenth century would probably have been in her mid-twenties and would be likely to have several children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which custom, opportunity, and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today, women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually, a woman's youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and can be expected to live another thirty-five years and is likely to take paid work until retirement at sixty. Even while she has the care of children, her work is lightened by household appliances and convenience food.

2. This important change in women's life patterns has only recently begun to have its full effect on women's economic position. Even a few years ago, most girls left school at the first opportunity, and most of them took a full-time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today, the school-leaving age is sixteen, many girls stay at school after that age, and, though women tend to marry younger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Very many more afterwards return to full-time or part-time work. Such changes have led to a new division of roles within the home, with the husband accepting a greater share of the duties of child-care and housework, and with both husband and wife sharing more in friendship and in interests, running the home, according to their abilities.
