A food chain shows how (1) _______ depend on each other for food. Every ecosystem contains one or more food chains. Most food chains begin with plants, which produce their own food. These plants are called producers. Animals that eat plants or (2) _______ animals are known as consumers. A squirrel that eats plants is a primary consumer, while a hawk that eats the squirrel is a secondary consumer.

Decomposers play an important role at the end of the food chain. These organisms, such as bacteria, (3) _______ dead plants and animals. This helps return nutrients to the soil, (4) _______ helps new plants grow. Then the food chain starts again.

1. Since September 2024, Hanoi has recorded many days with severe air pollution, ranking among the worst in the world. The Air Quality Index (AQI) has often been at red and purple levels, meaning the air quality is poor or very poor. Pollution is now affecting suburban areas as well. On January 6, nine locations in Hanoi had poor air quality, while three areas—Van Ha Commune, Minh Khai Ward, and Soc Son Town—were rated as unhealthy, with AQI levels ranging from 164 to 194.

2. The AQI measures air quality from 0 to 500. When the AQI is between 151 and 300, experts warn that people should stay indoors as much as possible and wear masks to protect themselves from fine dust (PM2.5). The main causes of air pollution are emissions from vehicles, construction, industrial factories, and craft villages.

3. To improve air quality, Hanoi has introduced several measures. The city has eliminated over 99% of coal stoves, reduced rice straw burning by 80%, shut down many traditional brick kilns, started testing emissions from old motorbikes, increased inspections of polluting industries, and regularly cleaned the streets.

1. The northern grasslands of the United States, also called prairies, extend from the Dakotas to the Rocky Mountains. Researchers are discovering that these grasslands can help reduce the effects of climate change caused by global warming.

2. Unlike trees, which have roots underground and most of their structure above ground, grasses in prairies have long roots that go deep into the soil. When wildfires burn trees, a lot of carbon from the trees is released into the air. However, less carbon dioxide is given off during wildfires because grasses' deep roots store carbon dioxide in the soil.

3. The prairies are home to many types of grasses and flowers, such as western wheatgrass, blue grama, and switchgrass. These plants grow with flowers like purple coneflower, hairy sunflower, and bladderpod. This variety of plants is important because it provides food for pollinators like insects and bats. The prairies also support special birds, such as the sage-grouse and burrowing owl, and mammals like prairie dogs, elk, and pronghorn.
