1 Cách sử dụng:

- Diễn tả một sự việc đã diễn ra tại một thời điểm cụ thể, hoặc một khoảng thời gian trong quá khứ và đã kết thúc hoàn toàn ở hiện tại.

VD: My family lived in Hanoi from 1990 to 2000. (Gia đình tôi đã sống ở Hà Nội từ năm 1990 đến năm 2000)

      They didn't agree to that contract. (Họ đã không đồng ý với bản hợp đồng)

      He was in New York from Tuesday to Saturday last week. (Anh ấy đã đang ở New York từ thứ ba đến thứ bảy tuần trước)

- Diễn đạt một hành động xen vào một hành động khác đang xảy ra trong quá khứ. (QKĐ dùng kết hợp với QK tiếp diễn)

VD: When I was cooking, the phone rang. (Điện thoại reo khi tôi đang nấu ăn.)

- Dùng trong câu điều kiện loại II.

VD: If I had a car, I would come and take you. (Nếu tôi có một chiếc xe oto, tôi sẽ đến đón bạn.)

2. Dấu hiệu nhận biết thì Quá khứ đơn:

- Do thì QKĐ diễn tả hành động xả ra trong quá khứ, nên khi nào gặp các từ chỉ thời gian trong quá khứ, đó sẽ được dùng ở thì QKĐ.

VD: yesterday, this(morning, afternoon,...), ago, last(year, month, week), first, later, then, after that, finally, in the past, at last, in the(1990s, 2000s), ....
