IN BRITAIN

Life can't be easy for musician Daniel Black. After a cycling accident in 2009, the doctors told him that he couldn’t walk or play the guitar. He had saved £22,000 for his intended expensive surgery when he heard about a young boy who also needed surgery to allow him to walk. Daniel told the boy's family that he would donate all his money to the boy’s surgery. The little boy was then able to walk again.

IN THE US

A man called Ethan Whittington read about Glen and started a campaign to collect money forhim. Ethan said that anamazing 160,000 was raised and Glen's life hasn't been the same since.

IN VIET NAM

In March 2020, Hoang Tuan Anh, a Vietnamese entrepreneur in Ho Chi Minh City invented a 24/7 automatic dispensing machine providing free rice for the poor during the Covid 19 lockdown. The machine distributed a 1.5 kg (3.3lb) bagful of rice from a small silo. The team said that people in need still had access to food and resources during the pandemic.

The last time someone did something kind for me was last Thursday. When I was coming home from school and my bike suddenly broke down, a friend helped me take the bike to the repair shop and took me home.

Dear Principal,

I am writing to request a change to an environmental problem that I have noticed in our school. I have observed that there is a significant amount of plastic waste that is generated daily, especially during lunch breaks, which is not being managed properly.

As we know, plastic is a major environmental issue, which takes hundreds of years to decompose. The fact that students discharge too much plastic waste not only harms the environment, adversely affects health, but also deteriorates the school landscape.

I believe that our school can take several steps to reduce plastic waste. Firstly, we could campaign to raise awareness about the negative impacts of plastic waste and encourage students to bring their own reusable water bottles instead of using plastic bottles. Secondly, we could introduce a recycling program in the school, where we classify the plastic waste and recycle it. This would reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. Finally, I would like to propose that the school takes action by providing reusable water bottles to every student and installing recycling bins in the school compound. By taking action, I believe that we can address the plastic waste problem in our school and make a positive impact on the world we live in.

Thank you for taking the time to consider my request. I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,
Dung

A: We must campaign to encourage people to put litter in the bins.

B: Let's create a petition.

1. People litter a lot in Nhieu Loc canal.

A: We need to propose a public campaign to raise awareness about the importance of keeping the canal clean.

B: I think people should volunteer to participate in canal cleaning activities.

2. People don't use the bins on the street.

A: I hope they introduce a law to demand strict fines and penalties for those who litter in public areas.

B: I think it is the best thing to do.

3. There's too much traffic in the city centre.

A: We need to aim to encourage people to use public transportation to reduce the number of cars on the road.

B: I think it is the best thing to do.

4. There's a lot of food waste in buffets.

A: I think people should propose a ban on excessive food waste in buffets by limiting the amount of food customers can take at one time.

B: Let’s create a petition.

- Volunteer for environmental conservation!

- Protesting against the destruction of natural habitats of wildlife!

- End racial discrimination!

- Supporting local charities that provide food and shelter to the homeless.

- Aim to reduce carbon emissions!

- Boycott fast food!

- Ban single-use plastics!

- Propose a ban on animal testing!

I can persuade my classmates to sign my own petition. For example, with the petition “Boycott fast food!” I can persuade people who care about their health, the environment or follow a healthy lifestyle to sign it.

Petition power!

Do you want to campaign for change?

Everyone CAN make a difference and you don’t need to donate money or volunteer. You simply need to sign a petition online. Here are a few active campaigns from the internet …

Say NO to orca shows

We should ban the use of orcas for entertainment. We believe that these intelligent, sociable animals should not be in captivity. We’d like people to boycott the shows and sign our petition. Please support our cause!

SAVE sea turtles on CON DAO island

We want to protest about the commercial hunting of turtles for their shells and the pollution in their natural habitat. We aim to raise awareness about sea turtle conservation on Con Dao Island, Viet Nam.

We love ugly fruit!

Supermarkets reject 20 - 40% of fruit and vegetables because they aren’t ‘perfect’. We propose that supermarkets sell ‘ugly’ fruit and vegetables at a lower price. Help us end food waste and allow more people to buy cheap, healthy food. Please support our campaign.

I agree with all the ideas.

- I agree with the petition “Say NO to orca shows”.

Because keeping orcas in small tanks and training them to perform tricks is cruel and inhumane. Moreover, they are highly intelligent and social animals that require a large and complex environment to thrive.

- I agree with the petition “SAVE sea turtles on CON DAO island”.

Because sea turtles play an important ecological role in marine ecosystems, they are valuable and endangered species that deserve protection. Commercial hunting and pollution are serious threats to sea turtle populations and their natural habitat.

- I agree with the petition “We love ugly fruit!”.

Because I believe that food waste contributes to environmental and social issues. Rejecting imperfect fruits and vegetables is wasteful, meanwhile, selling ugly produce at a lower price can reduce food waste and make healthy food more accessible to low-income households.
