Many people still believe that natural resources will never be used up. Actually, the world’s energy resources are limited. Nobody knows exactly how much fuel is left. However, we also should use them economically and try to find out alternative sources of power. According to Professor Marvin Burnharm of the New England Institude of Technology, we have to start conserving coal, oil and gas before it is too late; and nuclear power is the only alternative.

However, many people do not approve of using nuclear power because it’s very dangerous. What would happen if there was a serious nuclear accident? Radioactivity causes cancer and may badly affect the future generations.

The most effective thing is that we should use natural resources as economical as possible.

VII.Read the passage below and answer the questions:

We can develop alternative sources of energy, and unless we try we’ll never succeed. Instead of burning fossil fuels we should be concentrating on more economic uses of electricity, because electricity can be produced from any sources of energy.

If we didn’t waste so much energy, our resources would last longer. We can save more energy by conservation than we can produce for the same money. Unless we do research on solar energy, wind power, tidal power, hydroelectric plants… our fossil fuels will run out and we’ll all freeze or starve to dealth.

Many countries are spending much more time and money on research because the energy from the sun, the waves and the winds last forever. We really won’t survive unless we start working on cleaner and safer sources of energy.

1.. Can electricity be produced from any sources of energy?

Ä ……………………………………………………………….

2.. What would happen if we didn’t waste so much energy?

URBAN TRANSPORT PODS

The people living in Milton Keynes, a town about 70 kilometres northwest of London, have been introduced to a new transport experience when they use “pods” to travel on certain routes.

There is a touchscreen in windshield of the pods where passengers select their terminal. During the trip they can also read the news, check emails or play video games on the screen. Powered by electric motors, the pods have ultrasonic sensors and a GPS system that help themselves know where they are going and how to avoid obstacles along the way. People can use a smartphone app to hail a pod in the street.

II. Read the following passage and decide if it is T or F.
