The first stamp in the world was an English stamp. It was made in 1840. Before that, people paid money to the postman for every letter that they received and the postman did not give the letters to anybody who did not pay him. An English teacher, whose name was Rowland Hill, thought much about this. One day, he said that the people who wrote the letter should pay for them, and not the people who got the letters. He then spoke about it to the people in the government. Soon the post offices began to sell little pieces of paper with a stamp on them.

China said that there was a heavy loss of life in the earthquake which struck Tangshan city yesterday. Survivors said that Tangshan, an industrial city of one million people 160 kilometers east of Peking, was completely destroyed.
Observers living in Beijing said it appeared that only a small part of the one million inhabitants escaped death or injury.
Many of the men of Tangshan were working in the mines deep under the earth's surface when the earthquake occurred. Unfortunately, few of these miners have survived.
A lot of people were also working in the city's offices. Regrettably, most were killed under falling concrete when the building collapsed.
The Chinese authorities have not yet given any information about the actual number of casualties, but it is thought that tens of thousands of people have been killed. Hardly a building has been left standing.

Long ago a lot of people thought the moon was a God . Other people thought it was just a light in the sky . And others thought it was a big ball of cheese .
Then telecopes were made .And men saw that the moon was really another world . They wondered what it was like . They dreamed of going there .
On July 20 , 1969 , that dream came true . Two American men landed on the moon . Their names were Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin .
The first thing the men was that the moon is covered with dust . The dust is so thick that the men left footprints where they walked . Those were the first marks a living thing had ever made on the moon . And they could stay there for years and years . There is no wind or rain to wipe them off .
The two men walked on the moon for hours . They picked up rocks to bring back to us for study . They dug up dirt to bring back . They set up machines to find out things people wanted to know . Then they climbed back into their moon landing craft .
Next day the landing craft roared as the two men took off from the moon . They joined Micheal Collins in the spaceship that waited for them above the moon . Then they were off on their long trip back to earth .
Behind them they left the plains and tall mountains of the moon . They left the machines they had set up . And they left footprints that may last forever .
