When referring to the overuse of antibiotics, the expression “too much of a good thing” can't help but come to mind. In many cases, antibiotics are absolutely necessary; for example, they can stop an ear infection from making you go deaf and they can even save your life after surgery. But why is it detrimental to take them too often?

Our immune system is our body’s first line of natural defense against infectious organisms. It protects us from bacteria and other microorganisms that can make us sick. In the past, people relied on their own bodies to cure them of illnesses, without the aid of medication or antibiotics. Nowadays, we often turn to antibiotics to do what our immune system used to do for us. And it’s not difficult to figure out why they're so popular. Antibiotics are an easy cure for many sicknesses and help the patient get out and about again in a very short time.

The problem is that, by relying too much on antibiotics, we are weakening our immune system. Just like our muscles, our immune system needs exercise to stay in shape. If it is not used, it becomes weaker, and thus increasingly more antibiotics are required to cure an illness. Years of overuse lead to a vicious cycle that is almost impossible to break.

The other important factor to consider is that our bodies contain both good and bad bacteria. The good bacteria are essential for our bodies to maintain a balance and in this way, prevent illnesses. They also help to fight off other bad bacteria which make us sick. Unfortunately, antibiotics cannot tell the difference between them, and once in our system, kill off both types. This again results in our getting sick more easily.

Question 71: What is the main purpose of the passage?

A. to explain why antibiotics are absolutely necessary

B. to argue that antibiotics do not allow people to recover

C. to warn people to be cautious with antibiotic use

D. to compare antibiotics to different types of therapy

Question 72: What is the relationship between the immune system and antibiotics?

A. They are both equally effective against infection.

B. They both work to fight off illnesses.

C. They are both a natural form of defense.

D. They both need time to cure the patient.

Question 73: According to the passage, why are antibiotics so well-liked?

A. They make our body stronger.                        B. They are easy to obtain.

C. They can cure all kinds of illness.                 D. They work very fast.

Question 74: How do antibiotics weaken our immune system?

A. They kill off bad bacteria.                                  B. They prevent us from getting exercise.

C. They do its work so it gets less efficient.    D. They decrease the strength of our muscles.

Question 75: in the third sentence of the fourth paragraph, what does they refer to?

A. illnesses                     B. our bodies                   C. antibiotics                   D. good bacteria

The first thing to do when you have a trip abroad is to check that your passport is valid. Holders of out–of–date passports are not allowed to travel overseas. Then you can prepare for your trip. If you don't know the language, you can have all kinds of problems communicating with local people. Buying a pocket dictionary can make a difference. You'll be able to order food, buy things in shops and ask for directions. It's worth getting one. Also there's nothing worse than arriving at your destination to find there are no hotels available. The obvious way to avoid this is to book in advance. This can save you money too. Another frustrating thing that can happen is to go somewhere and not know about important sightseeing places. Get a guide book before you leave and make the most of your trip. It's a must.

Then, when you are ready to pack your clothes, make sure they are the right kind. It's no good packing sweaters and coats for a hot country or T–shirts and shorts for a cold one. Check the local climate before you leave.

Also, be careful how much you pack in your bags. It's easy to take too many clothes and then not have enough space for souvenirs. But make sure you pack essentials. What about money? Well, it's a good idea to take some local currency with you but not too much. There are conveniently located cash machines (ATMs) in most big cities, and it's usually cheaper to use them than change your cash in banks. Then you'll have more money to spend. When you are at your destination, other travelers often have great information they are happy to share. Find out what they have to say. It could enhance your travelling experience.

Apart from the news – which I find interesting, it’s difficult to find anything intelligent on any of the channels. What I really hate are those reality shows, like the one where they put people in a house for a few weeks and then film how they behave, as if they were animals in a zoo. From the little I’ve seen, it seems the people who make these programmes always put some really ignorant or selfish people in the house, and then expect the viewers to find their behaviour entertaining. I find it depressing. Question: What programmes does Stuart watch lots of?

27. Read and answer the questions Stuart There's a lot of good stuff on TV, so I watch something most days of the week. It's the easiest thing to do when I get home from work and I’m too tired to go out or read a book. I watch quite a lot of documentaries and the news because I like to know what's happening in the world, and I'm also a big fan of reality shows like Big Brother. In Big Brother they get real people together in a house for a few weeks, and because the house is full of cameras you can watch how they behave. Sometimes the people are celebrities. As a viewer you can decide which of the people you don't like, and then vote to evict them from the house - I love that! Patricia Most of the time I’m too busy to watch TV, and anyway there’s so much rubbish on these days.
