GRAMMAR 7-1: CONJUNCTIONS 

Exercise 1: Complete the sentences. Use although / but + a sentence from the box.  

Exercise 2: Complete the sentences with although/in spite of/because/because of.  1. ______ it rained a lot, we enjoyed our holiday.

Exercise 3: Make one sentence from two using the word(s) in brackets.  1. I couldn’t sleep. I was tired. (despite)

3. My foot was injured. I managed to walk home. (although) 

4. I enjoyed the film. The story was silly. (even though) 

5. We live in the same street. We hardly ever see each other. (despite) 6. I got very wet in the rain. I was only out for five minutes. (even though) Exercise 4: Write a new sentence with the same meaning, using unless.  1. You must try a bit harder or you won’t pass the exam.

2. Listen carefully or you won’t know what to do. 🡪 You won’t know what to do ____. 3. She must apologize to me or I’ll never speak to her again. 🡪___________________. 4. Exercise 5: Complete the report by putting in the correct words but, although, even  though, in spite of and despite. There is always more than one possible answer.  1. ______ the ground was very wet, it was decided to go ahead with United's game  against City.
