I. ĐẠI TỪ LIÊN HỆ LÀ GÌ

Đại từ liên hệ là từ đứng liền sau một danh từ để thay thế cho danh từ ấy làm chủ từ, bổ tuchs từ, hoặc sở hữu cách cho mệnh đề sau. Danh từ đứng trước đại từ liên hệ gọi là "từ đứng trước"(antecedent). Tuy theo vai trò nó đóng trong mệnh đề và từ đứng trước của nó, đại từ liên hệ có những hình thức sau đây:
 

II. CÁCH DÙNG CÁC ĐẠI TỪ QUAN HỆ

1. Cách dùng Who

Who được sử dụng là hình thức chủ từ khi từ đứng trước của nó là tiếng chỉ người

Ví dụ

• The man who spoke to you, is my father
• Người đàn ông, người mà đã nói chuyện với anh là cha tôi

• The girls who serve in the shop are the owner's daughters
• Những cô gái giúp việc ở hiệu là con gái ông chủ

2. Cách dùng Whom

Whom sử dụng là hình thức bổ túc từ, khi từ đứng trước là tiếng chỉ người

Ví dụ

• The man whom you meet is my father
• Người đàn ông, người mà anh gặp là cha tôi

• The girls whom you saw are my sisters
• Những cô gái mà anh thấy là các chị họ tôi

Chú ý:
Trong văn nói người ta thường dùng who hoặc that thay cho whom, hoặc phổ thông hơn nữa bỏ whom đi.

Ví dụ:

• Văn viết: The man whom you meet is my father
• Văn nói:
  • The man who you meet if my father
  • The man that you meet is my father
  • The man you meet is my father

Trong trường hợp whom làm từ bổ túc cho một giới từ, khi viết ta để giới từ trước whom, khi nói tư để giới từ sau cùng, còn whom được thay thế bằng that hoặc bỏ hẳn.

Ví dụ:

• Văn viết: The man to whom I spoke
• Văn nói:
  • The man that I spoke to
  • The man I spoke to.

3. Cách dùng Whose

Whose sử dụng là hình thức sở hữu cách khi từ đứng trước là tiếng chỉ người

Ví dụ:

• The men whose houses were damaged will be compensated.
• Những người có nhà bị thiệt hại sẽ được bồi thường

Chú ý: Danh từ chỉ sở hữu vật đứng sau whose không bao giờ có mạo từ.

4. Cách dùng which

Which sử dụng là hình thức chung cho chủ từ và bổ túc từ, khi tiền vị tự là tiếng chỉ vật

Ví dụ:

• The dog which won the race
• Con chó thắng cuộc đua

• The book which I bought
• Cuốn sách mà tôi mua

Chú ý:

Trong văn nói có thể dùng that thay cho which, hoặc có thể bỏ which đi khi nó làm bổ túc từ

Ví dụ:

• Văn viết: The dog which won the race
• Văn nói: The dog that won th race

Khi which làm bổ túc từ cho một giới từ, ta viết giới từ trước which nhưng lúc nói ta để giới từ sau cùng rồi thay which bằng that hoặc bỏ hẳn which đi.

5. Cách dùng That

That sử dụng có thể thay thế cho những hình thức who, whom, which như ta đã thấy ở trên ngoài ra that còn bắt buộc dùng trong những trường hợp sau đây:

- Sau cực cấp(superlative)
Ví dụ

• Saigon is the noisiest city that I have ever met
• Sài Gòn là thành phố ồn ào nhất mà tôi từng gặp

• This is the last letter that he wrote
• Đây là bức thư cuối cùng nó đã viết.

- Sau những tiếng all, only, very, every( và những tiếng kép với everry) no(và những tiếng kép với no), any, much, little.

Ví dụ:

• Answer all the questions that I asked you
• Hãy trả lời tất cả những câu hỏi tôi đã hỏi anh

• Thay lost the only son that they have
• Họ mất đứa con trai độc nhất mà họ có

• I have nothing that you
• Tôi không có cái gì bạn thích cả

- Sau từ đứng trước hỗn hợp(gồm cả người và vật)
Ví dụ:

• The people, cattle and carts that went to market
• Người súc vật và xe đi tới chợ

- Sau kiểu nói "it is"
Ví dụ:
It is the teacher that decides what to read

Chú ý: Có thể bỏ that đi trong những trường hợp là bổ túc từ

6. Cách sử dụng of which
Of which sử dụng là hình thức sở hữu cách này bây giờ ít dùng vì người ta thường sử dụng whose thay nó

Ví dụ: The house whose roof was damaged
Ngôi nhà có mái bị hư hại.
