Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply for a part-time receptionist, I believe having a part-time job is not only a great opportunity to boost my social skills but also to earn money for my family.

I am a student in ___ High School and in the final grade, I have some experience in this job before. Last summer, I worked at an English center as a receptionist. My duties included welcoming students, giving parents advice and distributing teachers' schedules. I also answered incoming calls and managed reservations to make sure the customers were satisfied with their services.

I am friendly, reliable and hard-working. I can also speak foreign languages, so I can help foreign customers.

I would be delighted to meet you in person to discuss my application.

I am available for an interview on weekdays.

If my application is successful, I will be able to start work after  July.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions below.

FAMILY LIFE IN THE UNITED STATES

Family life in the United States is changing. Fifty or sixty years ago, the wife was called a

“housewife”. She cleaned, cooked, and cared for the children. The husband earned the mo ney for the family.

He was usually out working all day. He came home tired in the evening, so he did not do much housework. And he did not see the children very much, except on weekends.

These days, however, more and more women work outside the home. They cannot stay with the children all day. They, too, come home tired in the evening. They do not want to spend the evening cooking dinner and cleaning up. They do not have time to clean the house and do the laundry. So who is going to do the housework now? Who is going to take care of the children?

Many families solve the problem of housework by sharing it. In these families, the husband and wife

agree to do different jobs around the house, or they take turns doing each job. For example, the husband always cooks dinner and the wife always does the laundry. Or the wife cooks dinner on some nights and the husband cooks dinner on other nights.

Then there is the question of the children. In the past, many families got help with child care from

grandparents. Now families usually do not live near their relatives. The grandparents are often too far away to help in a regular way. More often, parents have to pay for child care help. The help may be a babysitter or a day-care center. The problem with t his kind of help is the high cost. It is possible only for couples with jobs that pay well.

Parents may get another kind of help form the companies they work for. Many companies now let

people with children work part-time. That way, parents can spend mo re time with their children.

Some husbands may even stop working for a while to stay with the children. For these men there is a new word: they are called “househusbands”. In the USA more and more men are becoming househusbands every year.

These changes in the home mean changes in the family. Fathers can learn to understand their

children better, and the children can get to know their fathers better. Husbands and wives may also find changes in their marriage. They, too, may have a better understanding of each other.

Sixty years ago, most women ____________

  • A. went out to work
  • B. had no children
  • C. did not do much housework
  • D. were housewives

Everyone has their own preferences. And my hobby is drawing. I think my life would be boring without painting. I started learning to draw when I was 7 years old. The one who recognized my talent in painting was my father. Dad sent me to drawing classes right after that. With my innate ability and early exposure to painting, my drawing skills are much better than those of the same age. I will redraw interesting things that I meet every day. When I have time, I will draw portraits of the people I love and give them. Everyone loves the paintings I draw. Painting helps me feel lost and tired. I can sit all day in my room and draw whatever I want. Painting helps me relieve stress and love life more. Seeing the different vibrant colors makes me feel like my life – filled with color. Painting is a part of me. I think I will pursue it until the end.

Question II. Read the following passage and choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D) for each question.

THE ARTIST

People think being an artist must be a wonderful way to earn one's living. And of course, there are lots of great things about working for oneself, at home alone, even in a cold studio like mine. What I really like is that nobody tells me what time to start in the morning. I like to paint as soon as I wake up, which is always early, but isn't the same time every day. And nobody tells me what to wear, or whether I can take the afternoon off and go to a football match.

But then, I have no one to chat with when I'm bored, no one to discuss last night's match with during the office lunch hour. Sure, I can spend the afternoon doing something I enjoy like cycling or gardening if I choose. But the work will still be there when I do finally get back home.

Unfortunately, working at home means that people can always find me, whether I'm bored or not, and once I've answered the doorbell, it's too late - my thoughts have been interrupted. No one would dream of calling in if I worked in an office, but I find myself listening to friends' troubles. As they talk, my ideas disappear and I feel increasingly stressed thinking of my work waiting to be done.

However, when I hear the traffic news on the radio, and imagine my friends sitting miserably in their cars in a jam, feeling bored, or waiting unhappily for an overcrowded tram in the rain, I realise that I really haven't got much to complain about. I find a CD which will start me thinking, turn it up really loudly and begin another picture.

1. What is the writer trying to do in the text?

A. encourage readers to work at home B. explain why he has changed his job

C. describe his working life D. say how he would like to work

2. What does the writer like about his life?

A. He has plenty of opportunities for sport. B. He is his own boss.

C. He needn't work in the morning. D. He has a comfortable place to work.

3. What does the writer imagine he might do with colleagues?

A. have meals in restaurants B. go to the swimming pool

C. spend time in the countryside D. talk about sport

4. The writer plays loud music because

A. the traffic outside is noisy. B. it helps him to have ideas.

C. it prevents him from feeling bored. D. he dislikes listening to the radio.

5. Which of these notices would be most useful for the writer to put on his door?

A. I'm working, please don't disturb. B. Please call at my office for an appointment.

C. Please knock before entering. D. No visitors allowed during office hours.

It can help to (2) ______ your strength and energy, giving you (3) _______ efficient muscles and a stronger heart. But increasing your strength is (4) ______ the only advantage of cycling. Because you (5) ______ not carrying the weight of your body on your feet, it's a good (6) ______ of exercise for people with painful feet or backs. However, with all forms of exercise it's important to start slowly and build (7) ______ gently. Doing (8) ______ much, too quickly can damage muscles that aren't used to working. If you have (9) ______ doubts about taking up cycling for health reasons, talk to your doctor and ask (10) ______ his/her advice.
