There are a lot of people on the Earth every year, and experts agree that if we continue to grow food in the same way, there won't be enough food for everyone in the future. Growing food uses up a lot of land, and some people believe there simply isn't enough land in the world. So, some architects think that the answer is to grow food in cities, not in the countryside. They want to create “living buildings” in cities where people can live and also grow food to eat.
Their plan for a “living tower” shows a tall building with fifteen floors. There will be stores at the bottom of the building. There will be 130 apartments and offices on the higher floors. On every floor there will also be a “field”, which will grow fresh food such as tomatoes and strawberries. The people who live in the tower will be able to eat this food for free.
Architect Jason Goldsmith believes it is a very good idea to grow food in buildings. ‘There will be electronic temperature control, so there will always be perfect conditions for the plants,' he said. ‘We'll be able to recycle water from the apartments and use it to water the plants. And there's no hot sun inside, so if we water the plants, the water won't evaporate quickly. If we grow food in cities, we won't need many farms in the countryside, so we won't pollute our land and rivers. I believe that living buildings will really help the environment.'
But other people are not sure. They think it won't be feasible to grow much food in cities. But everyone agrees that if there are more people on the Earth in the future, we will need to adapt and grow food in different ways, so that we can make sure that there is enough food for everyone.
