(19) __________, the fact that protected areas are not open to tourists during this time also creates conditions for the natural ecosystem to (20) __________ faster, Deputy General Director of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) Ha Van Sieu has said. He also said it's time for managers to (21) __________ solutions to open up protected areas in a sustainable way.
Vietnam is well-known (22) __________ a variety of natural ecosystems, species and endemic genetic resources. Vietnam is also diverse in natural value and cultural tourism resources, (23) __________ promotes the development of ecotourism. Ethnic minorities with their unique features have attracted the attention of millions of tourists.
Tourism is a big business. As the world's largest industry, it currently accounts for more than ten per cent of global employment and the annual number of tourist trips worldwide is predicted to double in the next few years. The ever-increasing number of people travelling around the world has a major impact on both people and nature.
Mass tourism clearly is not sustainable. Inappropriate tourism developments and practices degrade habitats and landscapes, deplete natural resources, and generate waste and pollution. Ecotourism – defined by the International Tourism Society as responsible travel to natural areas that conserve the environment and sustains the well-being of local people – is often praised as the solution.
But are current ecotourism developments always a responsible alternative? The building of roads, car parks, and accommodation in national parks is just one example of the negative impact of ecotourism development. Lack of regulation has also led to ecotourism being used as a profitable marketing label for adventure holidays. In addition, some local communities have complained that they were never consulted about tourism development plans, or that the benefits are not what they expected.
And is ecotourism even desirable in some areas? A few ecotourists in a fragile environment may have a greater impact than hundreds of tourists in an exciting resort – and may open the way for mass tourism to follow. Critics of ecotourism, such as the Third World Network, fear that if all holidaymakers become ecotourists, then hordes of travellers may enter villages and protected areas – a development that could increase the undesirable impact of tourism rather than solve existing problems.
