Thành ngữ là cụm từ có ý nghĩa không thể suy ra từ nghĩa của từng từ riêng lẻ trong cụm từ đó. Thành ngữ thường mang ý nghĩa biểu đạt hay cách nói đặc biệt, và thường được sử dụng để truyền đạt ý tưởng một cách hiệu quả hơn. Dưới đây là các thành ngữ thường gặp.

1. Break the ice: Giúp bầu không khí trở nên thoải mái hơn trong một tình huống lúng túng.

Ví dụ: To break the ice, the teacher started with a funny story.

2. Hit the nail on the head: Nói chính xác hoặc đúng đắn về vấn đề gì đó.

Ví dụ: You really hit the nail on the head with your analysis of the problem.

3. Under the weather: Cảm thấy không khỏe.

Ví dụ: I'm feeling a bit under the weather today, so I might not come to school.

4. Spill the beans: Tiết lộ thông tin bí mật.

Ví dụ: Don't spill the beans about the surprise party!

5. Piece of cake: Rất dễ dàng.

Ví dụ: The math test was a piece of cake for John because he had studied hard.

6. Cost an arm and a leg: Rất đắt.

Ví dụ: The new smartphone costs an arm and a leg, so I'm waiting for a discount before buying it.

7. Break the bank: Tốn kém quá nhiều tiền.

Ví dụ: The vacation cost us an arm and a leg, but it was worth it.

8. Burn the midnight oil: Làm việc hoặc học tập muộn vào ban đêm.

Ví dụ: She had to burn the midnight oil to finish her project.

9. Hit the books: Bắt đầu học chăm chỉ.

Ví dụ: I need to hit the books if I want to pass the final exam.

10. Cry over spilt milk: Lo lắng về điều đã xảy ra mà không thể thay đổi.

Ví dụ: It's no use crying over spilt milk; we need to find a solution.

11. A blessing in disguise: Một điều không may mà cuối cùng lại mang đến kết quả tốt.

Ví dụ: Losing that job was a blessing in disguise because it led me to a better career.

12. Get cold feet: Cảm thấy lo lắng hoặc không dám làm điều gì đó vào phút cuối.

Ví dụ: She got cold feet about moving to a new city.

13. When pigs fly: Một điều sẽ không bao giờ xảy ra.

Ví dụ: She said she would go on a date with him, but that will happen when pigs fly.

14. In the same boat: Ở trong cùng một tình huống khó khăn.

Ví dụ: The local businesses are all in the same boat, struggling to recover after the natural disaster.

15. Pull someone's leg: Trêu chọc hoặc đùa giỡn với ai đó.

Ví dụ: I was just pulling your leg about the surprise party; it's actually next week.

16. Add fuel to the fire: Làm tình hình tồi tệ hơn.

Ví dụ: Arguing about it will only add fuel to the fire.

17. Burn the candle at both ends: Làm việc quá sức hoặc quá nhiều việc cùng một lúc.

Ví dụ: He’s been burning the candle at both ends with his two jobs.

18. Make ends meet: Đủ tiền để chi trả cho các nhu cầu cơ bản.

Ví dụ: They struggled to make ends meet after the pay cut.

19. A leopard can’t change its spots: Tính cách của một người không thể thay đổi.

Ví dụ: He’s always been unreliable; a leopard can’t change its spots.

20. At the drop of a hat: Ngay lập tức hoặc không do dự.

Ví dụ: He’s always ready to help at the drop of a hat.

21. Let the cat out of the bag: Tiết lộ một bí mật hoặc thông tin không nên được chia sẻ.

Ví dụ: He let the cat out of the bag about the surprise party.

22. On second thoughts: Sau khi suy nghĩ kỹ hơn hoặc thay đổi ý định.

Ví dụ: I was going to go for a walk, but on second thoughts, I decided to stay in and read.

23. Off the record: Không chính thức hoặc không được công khai.

Ví dụ: She mentioned off the record that she was considering leaving her job, but asked not to share it with anyone.

24. Come to light: Trở nên rõ ràng hoặc được phát hiện.

Ví dụ: New evidence came to light during the investigation.

25. See eye to eye: Đồng ý hoàn toàn với ai đó về một vấn đề.

Ví dụ: They finally saw eye to eye on the project’s objectives.

26. Keep an eye on: Theo dõi hoặc chú ý đến ai đó hoặc điều gì đó.

Ví dụ: an you keep an eye on my bag while I go to the restroom?

27. On cloud nine: Cảm thấy rất hạnh phúc hoặc vui sướng.

Ví dụ: She was on cloud nine after hearing the good news.

28. Out of the blue: Đột ngột và không dự đoán trước.

Ví dụ: The offer came out of the blue and took everyone by surprise.

29. A cup of tea: Thích hoặc không thích điều gì đó, thường dùng để chỉ sở thích cá nhân.

Ví dụ: Classical music is not really my cup of tea.

30. Hit the roof = Hit the ceiling: Trở nên rất tức giận hoặc nổi giận.

Ví dụ: He hit the roof when he found out about the damage to his car.

31. Take sb/sth for granted: Đánh giá thấp hoặc không trân trọng điều gì đó vì đã quá quen thuộc.

Ví dụ: She took his support for granted and didn’t realize how much he helped her.

32. Ups and downs: Những thăng trầm trong cuộc sống.

Ví dụ: Every relationship has its ups and downs.

33. Once in a blue moon: Rất hiếm khi xảy ra.

Ví dụ: I only see my cousins once in a blue moon since they live so far away.

34. Rain cats and dogs: Mưa rất to.

Ví dụ: We had to stay indoors because it was raining cats and dogs.

35. Chalk and cheese: Hoàn toàn khác nhau, như hai thái cực.

Ví dụ: My brother and I are like chalk and cheese; he loves sports, and I prefer reading.

36. On the spot: Ngay lập tức hoặc tại chỗ.

Ví dụ: He was offered a promotion on the spot after the interview.

37. On the verge of = on the brink of = on the edge of: Sắp sửa hoặc gần như xảy ra điều gì đó.

Ví dụ: The company is on the verge of a major breakthrough.

38. All at once: Cùng lúc, tất cả ngay lập tức.

Ví dụ: The children started talking all at once, making it hard to understand them.

39. A hot potato: Một vấn đề nan giải, nóng hổi.

Ví dụ: The scandal involving the politician was a hot potato, with everyone avoiding it in the media.

40. At all costs: Bằng mọi giá.

Ví dụ: My mom decided to buy that house at all costs.

41. The sky’s the limit: Không có giới hạn.

Ví dụ: The sky's the limit to what you can win in our competition.

42. The last straw: Giọt nước tràn ly.

Ví dụ: When he showed up late a third time, which was the last straw. We had to fire him.

43. The apple of one's eye: Người yêu quý / đồ quý giá của ai.

Ví dụ: She is the apple of her father's eye.

44. Right up one's street: Đúng kiểu, thứ ai đó thích.

Ví dụ: My dad bought me a car which is right up my street.

45. Put oneself in someone's shoes: Đặt bản thân vào hoàn cảnh của người khác.

Ví dụ:  Have you ever put yourself in my shoes?

46. Over the moon: Rất vui vẻ, hạnh phúc.

Ví dụ: After having this meal, she felt over the moon.

47. Now and then: Thỉnh thoảng, không thường xuyên.

Ví dụ: Now and then I heard a strange noise outside.

48. Learn by heart: Học thuộc lòng.

Ví dụ: I learnt this poem by heart.

49. Learn by rote: Học vẹt. 

Ví dụ: It's important to understand the concepts rather than just learning them by rote. 

50. Have / Get butterflies in someone's stomach: Cảm thấy bồn chồn.

Ví dụ: I always get butterflies in my stomach when it comes to taking test.

51. Esier said than done: Nói dễ hơn làm.

Ví dụ: Why don't you get yourself a job? - That's easier said than done.

52. Blow one's trumpet: Bốc phét, khoác lác.

Ví dụ: Stop blowing your trumpet.

53. Beat about the bush: Vòng vo tam quốc, không tập trung vào vấn đề chính.

Ví dụ:  Stop beating about the bush and tell me what you want.
