Conditional sentences Type 1
- Conditional sentences Type 1 are used to talk about present or future activities or events that are real or very probable. - Different modal verbs can be used in the main clause.
Examples: - If you have a birthday party, you'll get lots of presents. (probability) - If the weather is warm, we may / might go to the park (possibility) - If the weather is warm, you can go to the park (permission) |

Conditional sentences Type 2
- This type of conditional sentences is used to talk about present or future activities or events that are not real or unlikely to happen. - 'Could' can be used in either the main clause or the If-clause, or both.
Examples: - If I had more than 24 hours a day, I would be able to do more things. - If my dog could talk, he would / could tell me what he wants. |

Read these situations, match phrases below to make the correct conditional sentences
- Nancy doesn't live near the park. She can't go running there every morning.
- Nam can't swim. He is not allowed to go to the swimming pool alone.
- Tom doesn't have a passport. He can't travel abroad.
- There are so many tourists visiting the national parks. The environment there is badly damaged.
Conditional sentences Type 2
Read the situations and make conditional sentences. You can use could where possible
1. Victor doesn't speak English. He can't get a good job.
⇒ If Victor spoke English, he could get a good job.
OR: If Victor could speak English, he could/would get a good job.
OR: Victor could / would get a good job if he could speak English.
2. Tourists throw litter in the river. The water is polluted.
If tourists didn't throw litter in the river, the water polluted.
3. These students do not work hard. They can't pass the exam.
If these students worked hard, they pass the exam.
4. Hoa's got so much homework that she can't go out with her friends tonight.
If Hoa didn't have so much homework, she go out with her friends tonight.
