English clubs come in many different guises. What they do all have in common, however, is that they provide an opportunity for English language learners to practise using English in a relaxed and friendly setting. They can make an excellent contribution to student life at a university language centre, a state school or at a private language school, for example. English clubs give students a chance to practice English in a relaxed, informal environment, and to meet new people.

Many English Clubs are moderated by English teachers, but this doesn’t necessarily always have to be the case. Student support workers or even students themselves can often make great moderators.
The principles of a successful English club:

  • A good English club should be participant-centred. Some strategies to achieve this are:
  1. Encourage participants to bring in their own content.
  2. Ask participants questions about their lives.
  3. Divide participants into small groups to discuss questions or to do activities.
  4. Give participants opportunities to express themselves creatively in English, for example, through drama, poetry or storytelling. Alternatively, give them opportunities to explore visual communication, for example art or dance, with a post-performance discussion in English.
  • A good English club plays and important social role.

An English club can be a chance to meet new people and make new friends (both for both moderators and participants). This can be incredibly important for students studying English abroad, for example. Try to arrange the schedule so that there is time for people to stay and talk afterwards.

  • A good English club gives people freedom.

Students often appreciate the freedom from syllabi, exams and learning objectives. Teachers usually appreciate this too!

  • A good English club is rooted in the community.

Organize visits to local places or interest, or invite people from the local community in to talk to your participants.

  • A good English club is fun

Fun and enjoyment are elusive qualities. They happen when people are not looking for them. With regard to English clubs, it is almost impossible to predict in advance whether the activities planned will ‘click’ or not. Like a good teacher, an English club moderator should be flexible and intuitive, abandoning activities that fall flat, and embracing the spontaneous and unplanned.

Practical Activities

The following section suggests practical activities suitable for an English club. Three different types of activity are presented: discussions, online activities and activities for a themed English club.

1. Discussions

Having discussions based on a pre-determined theme often works well. Participants can work in pairs, small groups or can talk together as a whole group and discuss questions. For example:

Children and Childhood

  • What games did you play as a child? Can you remember how to play them?
  • What was your favourite TV programme or book when you were growing up? If possible, show a clip or read an extract of it to the group (perhaps at the next club). How does it make you feel when you see or read it again?
  • What is your earliest childhood memory?
  • Who is the youngest person you know?
  • Have you ever wished you were a child again? Why/why not?
  • Talk about a time you (or someone you know) did something very naughty as a child. Were any adults angry?

2. Online Activities

If your participants can get online, then a whole wider world can open up for your English club. This activity is one of my favourites.

Music and Memory

Participants choose a piece of music that reminds them of a happy time in their life. (It does not need to be a piece of music with English lyrics.) They prepare a presentation describing:

  • the song
  • the place
  • the people
  • the time and the situation it reminds them of
  • what makes the piece of music special for them

Participants can then take turns to play their songs, either from the playlist on their mobile devices or streamed off YouTube, and give their presentations.

3. Themed English Clubs

Some English clubs have a theme, organizing a different activity related to that theme for each time the group meets. This generally works best when the club has a core of members who attend relatively frequently. Below are a few ideas for a club with the theme of books.

English book club

  • Participants bring in a book they are reading (or have read recently) and give a short talk to the group about it.
  • Participants ‘pitch’ their favourite book to the group. The other members decide how good they think the pitch was, and say whether it makes them want to read the book.
  • The moderator distributes a range of different books from the school library. Participants look at the cover only, and discuss the following questions:

Would you read this book? Why/why not?

Participants then read the first two or three pages and discuss these questions:

What is the book about?

Have you changed your mind about reading the book?

How effective is it to ‘judge a book by its cover’?

Summary

To summarise, English Clubs are, potentially, a very valuable part of the English language student experience. This article has outlined five principles of a successful English club, these are that it is participant centred, that it plays a social role, that it gives participants and moderators freedom, that it is rooted in the community and that it is fun. This article also presents examples of three different types of activity suitable for an English club.

This article is based on material from an e-book, English Clubs, published by The Round, an independent collective of ELT authors, in March 2013.

By Mike Cruse

Dear Timmy:

You know, it’s funny, for as long as we’ve known each other, we’ve spent very little time actually around each other. But I really wanted to tell you how much the time we’ve spent together has meant to me, and I also wanted to say thank you.

We don’t really think about it much, but the words “thank you” can accomplish so much and can convey more than one could possibly imagine.

Thank you for being one of the first people to be nice to me in elementary school. I think you saw the fear in my eyes when I showed up at a new school where most of you had kind of grown up around each other. You hung out with me on the playground and would always invite me to play games with you at recess.

Thank you for always being the same back then, no matter what. I sadly hit my popular peak in fifth grade, and even though we were in the same class we didn’t talk so much. That was my fault and I’m sorry.

While I was feeling the joy of being popular, you were being labeled as troublemaker — and worse, a lost cause — by the very adults that were supposed to be guiding us, teaching us, nurturing us. No child should be made to feel that way.

3. As for me I spent a week in Turkey. I took the plane in Paris
and flew for three and a half hours to Izmir. There a woman
was waiting for us to drive us by bus to Kusadasi (pronounced
kouchadaseu). She is a French woman who married a Turkish
man five years ago. She is from Lievin, in the North of France.
She confessed that her husband followed her to France but
he didn't get used to the weather. It was a bit too wet and
too cold for him. So, they went back to Turkey. He then
became the manager of a hotel (not the one we went to) and
she started working for a holidays group at the hotel where
we went.
We arrived in the afternoon at the hotel which is based very
close to the sea. How wonderful it is to have meals almost on
the beach, listening to the waves and looking at the sun
downing in the evening. We could have a glass, then go to the
beach and as soon as we were thirsty come back to the bar
and have another glass before swimming a little. It was very
comfortable. I loved it.
Concerning the site, it was very beautiful. The beach was in
front of us and on the right side, we had a view on the
mountains. We even took a boat to some little beaches on the
edge of these mountains. The water was like a warm bath.
And you'd say, what about Turkish people? They are really
nice. They don't speak a lot of French, but if you can speak English, I assure you you can spend good time with them. I
had the feeling that they didn't know what to do to please us.
I have never met so nice people. I advise you to go there,
really, you'll come back with so many souvenirs in your minds.

Nowadays, the growing development of means of transportation has made traveling between countries easier than ever, creating enormous conditions for people going abroad for holidays to enjoy themselves. However, travelling to foreign country sometimes brings about some disadvantages for the travelers who are not well-prepared.
In this essay, I will present the benefits and drawbacks of having a holidays in a foreign country.
On the one hand, travelling overseas can benefit you in some aspects as follows:
Firstly, being in a different country can give you an exciting moment when seeing many historical places and spectacular monuments. This memory will leave a good impression on your mind afterwards. For instance: the gorgeous scenery and old age temples in Thailand has made me excited and impressed when seeing these places of interest.
Secondly, living in a foreign country and having their local dishes can give you a completely new experience in having their traditional food, which you have never tasted i your own country. In fact, being on the tour of Beijing, I had a chance of enjoying the dish of Fried Duck which has been the tastiest and softest meat I have ever tried so far.
Thirdly, staying abroad can help you understand traditional values and characteristics through joining their festivals and other cultural activities. For instance, taking part in the Watering Festival in Laos and Thailand might be a great joy for travelers to understand their unique customs in welcoming New year.
On the other hand, while having holidays in an exotic country, people can cope with some drawbacks as follows.
Firstly, language barrier is the most difficult problem for you to overcome, especially in a country which English is not popular. In reality, it is very difficult for tourists to read traffic signs and public billboards in some Arabic countries with a strange type of letters which is totally different from our Latin alphabet.
Secondly, in some cases, you will be got in trouble just in case of being sick without lots of money in your pocket. The cost of treatment will be much higher in your country, especially in case you had no medical insurance.
Thirdly, travelling abroad can cost you a lot of money. You must have a good preparation for your trip including : airfares, travelling and hotel costs and other expenses during your journey. A well-prepared plan can bring you some comforts during the journey to an exotic country.
In conclusion, going abroad can give you unforgettable memories about gorgeous land, familiar people, unique customs and delicious foods which you have never experienced before. However, to be satisfied with these enjoyment, you should have a good preparation for the budget, knowledge about the foreign country that you will visit.

Nowadays, more and more people around the world travel abroad to spend their holidays there. It is also easier and easier for people to go around the world thanks to globalization. Therefore, the number of foreign tourists is continuously increasing in every countries in the world, especially developed countries. Along with many benefits and joyfulness it brings when travelling abroad, there are also some disadvantages that people have to suffer from. So what are they? In this essay, I am going to show you the good and bad things about having a vacation in other countries. First, people desire to go abroad because they want to discover new lands, a place that they have never been to. Each country has different climate, scenery, people, culture, food and so on, so people want to see those differences, enjoy the new things in other countries. People around the world are attracted by the country's architecture. In particular, the architectural designs between the East and the West is different and each country has its own architecture, therefore, it brings people enthusiasm and satisfaction when they set foot in the strange nation. Tourists are not only attracted by man-made building but also by natural scenery. Beautiful beaches with turquoise water and white sand, marvelous mountain ranges with snow on top or forests with diverse plants and animals attract millions people from all over the world to explore. That must be great experiences! Other excellent factors that tourists want to discover when travelling overseas are food and culture. The food around the world is diverse and delicious, too. Even though the foreign food is tasty or not, the feelings when we eat are the exciting and unforgettable memories. Besides, different cultures also bring excitement for travellers during their journeys. Hence, travelling abroad brings us not only knowledge about different places in the world but also the great memories that we will never forget in the future. On the other hand, travellers also suffer from many troubles before and during their trip abroad. The tourists have to do many preparations which take lots of time to finish. Although a trip abroad nowadays is easier than it was a few years ago, people must make sure about the information in passports, visas, international driving permits and variety of documents they will need to bring along the trip. Furthermore, not getting knowledge about the destination such as the culture, the food, the language can also make tourists confused. For instance, one of my relatives travelled to the UK last year. Before the trip, he was very excited. But when he came back to Vietnam, he told me that he had to eat fast food all three days of the trip because he couldn't speak English. Therefore, the language barrier can make the trip abroad a bit less happy. Tourists should read the brochure that brings information about the place they will visit to get more knowledge in order not to be confused when they are in other countries. Besides, there are also other barriers that prevent travellers from their trip overseas such as money, time, ... It's hard for low-income people or people from developing countries to have a trip outside their countries. Moreover, the increase of working hours, the shorter summer vacation have cut the demand of travelling abroad. However, if travellers think positively about their trip, these barriers are not the problems. It all depends on your attitude. To sum up, travelling abroad can bring enthusiasm and excitement for tourists. They can know more about the world and get some unforgettable memories. Travelling abroad also benefits the tourism industry of the host country, promote the development of tourism, the prosperity of society and contribute to the diversity of human culture. However, people must prepare deeply for the trip to have a healthy and safe trip overseas.

Learning the English language in a country where people speak English is a very advantageous option, although not the only way. Personally, I completely agree with this statement, because living in English spoken country has a lot of benefits in terms of mastering this language.

Learning English is easier in an English-speaking country because the people around you are speaking English and makes it easy to adjust to English accent and also sentence patterns. For instance, it is very hard to learn English accent without listening to English. Besides living in English speaking country will enrich your vocabulary and grammar and that enhancement will occur spontaneously. And you can ask anything about the language that you have doubts about. You are bound to speak in this language and that would give you an excellent opportunity to enhance your speaking skill.

On the other hand, it is not the only way to learn a language. There are a lot of books that you can utilise. English radio programmes or TV shows are best options to learn the language. So, it will help you increasing your listening skills. In addition, nowadays, the internet is widespread and also a superiority in our world. Thereby, the internet comprises all kind of information and it will help you about your doubts. It is evident that there are enough programmes for speaking with somebody in which it will improve your speaking skills.

I would agree that people who live in a country like Canada, USA, UK or Australia, where English is used as the primary way of communication, would help them master this language pretty quickly and accurately. But not always you need to live there to learn this language. It is not uncommon for people who have never been in an English speaking country to have an excellent command over this language. Some of the poets and writers who wrote successful English literature have been born and raised and lived in non-English- speaking countries.

To sum up, learning English in an English spoken language will make it easy to study but there are a lot of ways that can be used for learning this language.

Nowadays, there are a lot of students who work while studying. Although this tendency may lead to negative results, the number of young people who sacrifice education for work is growing. I believe that this problem has certain causes and can be solved by taking special measures.

It is apparent that most of the students who work have many financial expenses to meet. One common cause is high cost of education. As many colleges and universities set high tuition fees, some families cannot fully afford the higher education for their children. Consequently, these students have to work to pay university and college fees. The other cause is living expenses. Many students study away from hometown, and have to pay for accommodation, food, entertainment etc. As it is often hard to cover these expenses, students are forced to earn money to afford their living. I think that the problem of students working during their studies results in lower quality of education and has no benefits at all. Thus, it should be solved on the governmental level.

I can suggest two possible solutions to this problem. Firstly, the government could make higher education free. For instance, this result can be achieved by financing educational establishments from the country’s budget. Not only will it make universities and colleges accessible for everyone, but it will also reduce the number of working students. The second solution is promoting unpaid e-learning. Such form of distance education doesn’t require a lot of resources to be maintained. What’s more, students don’t have to leave their homes and can plan their schedules the way they prefer.

In conclusion, I believe that mainly lack of financial resources causes students to work, but this problem can be solved by lowering the amount of financial expenses students have to meet.
