8 Ways You Can Help Your Community Amid the COVID-19 Crisis

Even in the era of social distancing, we can still connect with our neighbors and offer support to those in need.

Amid the COVID-19 crisis, supporting our local communities is essential during these challenging times. As cities and towns ask their residents to stay home to slow the virus’ spread, many of us are grappling with how to be there for each other when we can’t be near each other. Our work at Earthjustice continues without interruption. Staff members nationwide are forging ahead in a remote capacity and sharing ideas to safely connect with our neighbors and offer assistance to those most affected by the pandemic. Here are eight ways we are supporting our communities that we hope will be helpful for your own local efforts:

GIVE FIVE, WAVE FIVE

“One thing I have been doing is making a $5 donation at the grocery check-out every time I shop now. Food banks are struggling, and even with my husband closing his acupuncture clinic we can afford $5. It's small, but it feels good. Another micro-action I have been doing is waving and saying hi to neighbors, through the window if they walk by or across the street if we are outside shoveling snow or taking out trash at the same time. We have a number of older neighbors too, and isolation is hard. Small acts of kindness go a long way.” – Karilyn

TRANSIT(ION) TO DONATION

“Since I’m not using public transit money for a while I’m cancelling my transit order and allocating the funds from that to donations to arts orgs, mutual aid organizing groups, and restaurant gift certificates. It feels good.” – Emily J.

CONVERSATIONS WITH DOGS

“On my walks, it has seemed like many folks are avoiding conversation and eye contact (maybe it’s just me), but I’ve been going out of my way to say hello and just try to connect... it seems important to make sure we don’t forget how to be humans while also keeping distance. I’ve also waved at dogs. They appear to be into it.” – Ali W.

WHOLESALE ORDER UP!

“I just ordered a 25-pound box of produce from a family-run produce wholesaler here in LA. All their customers are restaurants who cancelled all their orders. So they’re selling direct and will even deliver to keep their staff employed. They expressed a lot of gratitude for the support so their business can remain throughout this crisis. Not sure how widespread this is but it might be worthwhile to look out for this in your neighborhood.” – Linda

MASKS FOR ALL

“I’m doing an N95 and surgical mask drive for some doctor friends at Kaiser who are starting to ration them. If you have any boxes/packages to spare (maybe some unused from our last wildfire season, or some you bought for a home project you never got around to), I can — carefully — pick them up from your porch and do a delivery. So far we’ve got about 20 unopened N95 masks for delivery.” – Zoe

DINE INSIDE

“It’s a tiny thing, but we’ve been ordering food from local restaurants (even though we have a stocked pantry!) to try to support them. Making sure we can do either curbside pickup or contactless delivery (to protect them and us from potential transmission) and tipping a ton.” – Nick R.

BUY NOW, USE LATER GIFTCARDS

A number of small local businesses I’m connected to have asked that customers purchase gift certificates during this time. I want to give a shout out to my personal favorite in Oakland: Nick’s Pizza (a very small, very queer friendly bakery on Shattuck. Their bagels are GOOD and I miss them A LOT). You can find information about how to support them on their Instagram: nickspizza510.” – Christine (This bakery has also set up a Worker Relief Fund!)

THE START OF SOMETHING NEW

“Some friends and I got together to create a fundraising initiative to support COVID-19 relief efforts in the Bay Area. Would super appreciate it if folks would consider contributing and also sharing with your networks! Thank you.” – Rebecca B. (This initiative is aimed at supporting relief efforts impacting vulnerable communities.)

Sometimes people forget how we depend on nature and environment surrounding us. We spend mindlessly the resources given by nature and believe that they are unlimited. Over the last millennia the population on the planet grew immensely and our needs increase with every year. We achieved great breakthrough in industry and other fields of production. But this growth resulted in poor environmental conditions. It seems that every our achievement and advancement only do damage to nature.

We have been using natural resources thoughtlessly for many years. Once we exhausted one resource we started to use up another alternative. Have you ever thought what our life will be when coal and oil will come to the end? Plug-in hybrid vehicles are good solutions for the fuel crisis to come.

We must reconsider our lifestyle we got used to. Simple rules will help you to save environment, keep fit and save money.

  1. You can decrease water usage by exploiting water-saving appliances, use baking soda and vinegar for cleaning your house, collect rainwater and recycle it. Do not pollute water with chemicals and other contaminants. You can also take shorter showers and use low-flow showerheads.
  2. Conserve electricity. Turn off light in the rooms you are not in, unplug electronic appliances that are not in use. Change your regular bulbs to fluorescent or LED bulbs.
  3. Segregate your rubbish so that it could be easier to recycle. Use separate trash bags for metal cans, paper and plastic.
  4. Use public transport or carpool when going to work. Let your children take school bus instead of driving them to school by your own car.
  5. When shopping pay attention to the manufacturers that use recyclable packaging. Do not use polythene bags and do not take additionally packed products as fruit and vegetables.
  6. Plant trees and join Greenpeace communities, be active in green movement and participate in their activities.
  7. Do not throw away garbage that can be recycled. Such things as batteries and cell phones contain hazardous pollutants.
  8. Do not turn on your heating system to high temperatures, you would rather dress better. Besides, you can sleep better when it is not very hot in your bedroom.

These and other ideas will help to preserve environment and make life more sustainable. The tips are not difficult to fulfill everyday. We must develop a habit to live frugally without excessive luxury.

New generation will need new conditions to successfully survive in our deteriorating natural environment. The future catastrophes are not distant events, they happen here and now. We must raise new ecologically concerned generation to prevent possible problems. We have to take changes from ourselves and promote green living among rising generation.

Nature gave us all necessary resources to live and prosper. Now it is in danger and needs our help. What else we can do to protect environment? First of all this decisions must be made on governmental level and provide legal limitations for industries that emit a lot of greenhouse gases. We must unite together in order to protect the place we live in. People are an integral part of nature, we are dependent of it as we can not imagine our life without nature. So why to destroy environment and bite the hand that feeds you? We must stop deforestation and plant trees on cut down areas. Trees are natural filter of air that absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. Cutting down trees we deprive animals of their natural environment and the soil begin to grow in erosion. Planting trees will save birds and other animals.

We often make forced choices that are advertised on TV. Manufacturers try to rise their profits and sell more products. Sometimes we have so many unnecessary things we do not use. Imagine that you are moving your house, what are the necessary items you may need to live, only several bags. In reality the matter is opposite. There are a lot of things we do not use.

People have to reconsider their views of life and promote healthy and ecologically friendly lifestyle. It is up to us to change situation for better and leave good legacy for generations to come.
