The first rock 'n' roll record to achieve (1.NATION) national popularity was "Rock Around the Clock" made by Bill Haley and the Comets in 1955. The melody was (5.CLEAR) clearly laid down by (6.ELECTRICITY) electric guitar; the lyrics were (7.EARTH) earthy and simple. Haley (8.ABRUPT) abruptly ended the ascendancy of the bland and (9.SEMTIMENT) sentimental ballads popular in the 1940s and early 50s. He also succeeded in translating black rhythm and blues into a form that (10.ADOLESCENCE) adolescent white audiences could understand.
