Humans have long been fascinated by outer space, and have wondered if there are intelligent life forms elsewhere, which we might be able to contact. (1) ______Naturally____________ we have all read about space creatures in our Science fiction novels, and have seen them on our TV and cinema screens, but “aliens” like these owe more to the (2) ______convenience_________ of using human actors or (3) ________activity__________ to play the parts than to any real form of scientific (4) ______investigation__________ . However, many serious space (5) ______researchers_________ are now beginning to turn their attention to the question of wha alien life might (6) _______actually_______ look like. One early result is Arnold the Alien, designed by (7) _____biologist________ Dougal Dixon. This strange being, (8) _____likely_________ humans, has its eyes, ears and limbs in groups of three instead of pairs but, despite its odd (9) __________appearance________ its behaviour is not very (10) ______different_______ from our own.

Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and is commonly referred to as the Red Planet. The rocks, soil and sky have a red or pink hue. The distinct red color was observed by stargazers throughout history. It was given its name by the Romans in honor of their god of war. Other civilizations have had similar names. The ancient Egyptians named the planet Her Descher meaning the red one.
Before space exploration, Mars was considered the best candidate for harboring extraterrestrial life. Astronomers thought they saw straight lines crisscrossing its surface. This led to the popular belief that irrigation canals on the planet had been constructed by intelligent beings. In 1938, when Orson Welles broadcasted a radio drama based on the science fiction classic War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells, enough people believed in the tale of invading Martians to cause a near panic.
Another reason for scientists to expect life on Mars had to do with the apparent seasonal color changes on the planet's surface. This phenomenon led to speculation that conditions might support a bloom of Martian vegetation during the warmer months and cause plant life to become dormant during colder periods.

As we explore the (1) _____universe ______, we naturally ask, “Is there life on other planets?” In 1976, NASA’s twin Viking landers touched (2) ____surface _______ on Mars in an attempt to answer a weighty question: Is there life on the Red Planet? Since then, NASA and other space agencies have sent many more (3) _____ missions ______ to Mars. However; the answer so far is, “We don’t know, but we’ll keep searching.” All life on Earth needs liquid water to (4) _____ survive ______. Since spacecraft haven’t found any liquid water on Mars’ (5) _____ down ______, scientists think that there is no life there. But what about below the surface? Spacecraft have discovered (6) ____might_______ water in Mars’ polar ice caps and in clouds of ice crystals. This means that there (7) _____ frozen______ be liquid water below the surface where it’s warmer. NASA plans to continue to (8) _____explore______ Mars every two years. In future missions, we’ll explore below the surface and search for liquid water - and life!
