Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 38 to 45.

Halloween falls on October 31 each year in North America and other part of the world. What do you know about Halloween? Do you celebrate it in your country? Here is a little history about it?

Like other holidays, Halloween has evolved and changed throughout history. Over 2,000 years ago people called the Celts lived in what is now Ireland, the UK, and parts of Northern France. November 1 was their New Year's Day. They believed that the night before the New Year (October 31) was a time when the living and the dead came together.

More than a thousand years ago the Christian church named November 1 All Saints Day (also called All Hallows). This was a special holy day to honor the saints and other people who died for their religion. The night before All Hallows was called Hallows Eve. Later the name was changed to Halloween.

Like the Celts, the Europeans of that time also believed that the spirits of the dead would visit the earth on Halloween. They worried that evil spirits would cause problems or hurt them. So on that night people wore costumes that looked like ghosts or other evil creatures. They thought if they dressed like that, the spirits would think they were also dead and not harm them.

The tradition of Halloween was carried to America by the immigrating Europeans. Some of the traditions changed a little, though. For example, on Halloween in Europe some people would carry lanterns made from turnips. In America, pumpkins were more common. So people began putting candles inside them and using them as lanterns. That is why you see Jack 'o lanterns today.

These days Halloween is not usually considered a religious holiday. It primarily a fun for children. Children dress up in costumes like people did a thousand years ago. But instead of worrying about evil spirits, they go from house to house. They knock on door and say "trick or treat". The owner of each house give candy or something special to each trick and treat.

According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. The Celts created All Hallows

B. The name Halloween originated from the word Hallows Eve.

C. Halloween falls on October 31 each year.

D. Halloween is a special holy day to honor the saints and people who died for their religion.

“Where is the university?” is a question many visitors to Cambridge ask, but no one can give them a clear answer, for there is no wall to be found around the university. The university is the city. You can find the classroom buildings, libraries, museums and offices of the university all over the city. And most of its members are the students and teachers or professors of the thirty-one colleges. Cambridge is already a developing town long before the first students and teachers arrived 800 years ago. It grew up by the river Granta, as the Cam was once called. A bridge was built over the river as early as 875.

In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, more and more land was used for college buildings. The town grew faster in the nineteenth century after the opening of the railway in 1845. Cambridge became a city in 1951 and now it has the population of over 100000. Many young students want to study at Cambridge. Thousands of people from all over the world come to visit the university town. It has become a famous place all around the world.

Đáp án D.

Tạm dịch: Women ___________  new hats, called Easter bonnets: Phụ nữ _________ những chiếc mũ mới được gọi là mũ Phục Sinh.

  A. take on: đảm nhiệm

  B. bore: chịu đựng

   C. put on: mặc thứ gì lên người

  D. wore: mặc thứ gì lên người

Loại đáp án A vì đây đang là câu kể phải để ở thì quá khứ đơn, đáp án A lại là hiện tại đơn. Loại đáp án B vì không hp nghĩa. Xét sự khác nhau giữa đáp án C và D:

- to put on: nhấn mạnh vào động tác mặc lên người.

Ex: Anna is in the changing room putting on her clothes: Anna đang ở trong phòng thay đồ mặc quần áo.

- to wear: chỉ tình trạng đang mặc gì đó.

Ex: He’s wearing his best outfit today: Hôm nay anh ta diện bộ đồ đẹp nhất của anh ta.

Vì tác giả chỉ đang đề cập tới việc trong quá khứ, phụ nữ đội mũ Phục Sinh nên không nhấn mạnh vào động tác, mà vào hình ảnh, trạng thái.
