A recent investigation by scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey shows that strange animal behavior might help predict future earthquakes. Investigators found such occurrences in a ten-kilometer radius of the epicenter of a fairy recent quake. Some birds screeched and flew about wildly: dogs yelped and ran around uncontrollably.

Scientists believe that animals can perceive these environmental changes as early as several days before

the mishap.

In 1976 after observing animal behavior the Chinese were able to predict a devastating quake. Although hundreds of thousands of people were killed, the government was able to evacuate millions of other people and thus keep the death toll at a lower level.

1. The best title for the passage is

A. A recent investigation about an earthquake

B.  Some animals can predict future earthquakes

C. Some strange animal behavior

D.  Dogs can predict earthquakes

2.  Which can be predicted by observing animal behavior?

A. The number of people who were killed by an earthquake

B. A ten-kilometer radius of the epicenter C

C. The health condition of the animals

D.  A future earthquake

3.  A word with the same meaning as the word "evacuate" is:

A.  destroy            B.  remove            C. throw               D. bring

4. Which sentence is not true according to the passage?

A.  All birds in ten-kilometer radius of the epicenter became wild before a quake.

B.  Scientists can predict earthquakes by observing animal behavior

C. Some animals can perceive these environmental changes several days earlier.

D. Some animals can sense a future earthquake.

5. What was the Chinese government able to do after predicting an earthquake thanks to observing animal behavior?

A.  They can keep the death toll at a lower level.

B.  Hundreds of thousands of people were saved

C. They can evacuate billions of other people

D. They control the natural disaster

Unlike buried treasure and some minerals, fossils are usually not valuable in themselves. However, most of the fossils you find will be of greatest value to you. They will help you learn much about the geologic history of the earth and its inhabitants.

If it were not for fossils, we would have no way of knowing about the animals that once roamed the earth or that once crawled on the bottom of the ancient seas. In fact, we would not even know for sure that there were once seas in some regions if it were not for the many fossils of sea animals that we find there.

You can look at some fossils and see for yourself the shape of the ancient animals. Even if you collect only bits of one kind of fossil, you may still be able to tell what it looked like. Making sense out of fossil bits is a little like working a jigsaw puzzle. Sometimes you will lose pieces, but you can still recognize the picture and even use your imagination to fill in missing details. The habits of ancient sea animals are not so easy to determine. Therefore, scientists study the structure and the habits of similar living animals to learn what the ancient ones must have been like. There are some things, however, that neither the study of fossils nor the study of living animals can tell us. For example, no one knows what colour most ancient sea animals were. Also, since the soft parts disappeared soon after death, many details of their internal structure are unknown. So the pictures of ancient sea creatures (as well as dinosaurs!) are what scientists think the animals looked like. Reconstructing the life of an ancient sea animal on the basis of fossil evidence and the characteristics of similar living animals is a little like relying on circumstantial evidence in court.

Peshtigo Fire

On October 8, 1871, the most devastating forest fire in American history swept through northeast Wisconsin. The blaze began at an unknown location in the dense Wisconsin forest. It first spread to the small village of Sugar Bush, where every resident was killed. Strong winds then sent the 200-foot flames racing northeast toward the neighboring community of Peshtigo. Temperatures reached 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, causing trees to literally explode in the flames. The wildfire even jumped across the Peshtigo River, trapping both sides of the town in flames.

After raging for about two hours, the fire burned more than 280,000 acres in Oconto, Marinette, Shawano, Brown, Kewaunee, Door, Manitowoc and Outagamic counties. The human toll was 1,152 known dead and another 350 believed to be dead. Another 1,500 were seriously injured and at least 3,000 made homeless. The property loss was estimated conservatively at $5,000,000 and this did not include 2,000,000 valuable trees and a large number of animals. Despite the massive scale of the blaze, it has been overshadowed by the Great Chicago Fire, which began on the same day about 250 miles away.

Beautiful Landscapes – More Than Just a Painting

When most people look at a painting of a sunset, they see a beautiful work of art. When Professor Christos Zerefos looks at a painting of a sunset, he sees valuable scientific evidence. He believes that these paintings contain important information about the effect of volcanoes on the climate.

Scientists know that after a volcanic eruption, sunsets are very red. This is caused from the dust and ash that is sent into the sky. Volcanoes also lower the temperature of the Earth.

Professor Zerefos and his team decided to study paintings of sunsets before and after volcanic eruptions. Red sunsets are a sign of polluted skies, so the scientists believed that landscapes that were painted around the times of major volcanic eruptions would have bright red sunsets. They wanted to use the paintings to measure how the volcanoes had affected the climate in the past.

The team studied 500 watercolours and oils of sunsets that were painted between 1500 and 1900. The scientists used a computer to calculate the amount of red in each picture. They found that the sunsets that were painted after a volcanic eruption were bright red.

Many scientists are not convinced by this theory. According to them, it is impossible to make scientific conclusions based on art that was painted so long ago, because it is possible that the colours have changed since they were originally painted. What is more, artists often try to make something look very impressive when they paint. As a result, they may not always paint an accurate picture of nature.

Professor Zerefos disagrees. He is certain that artists accurately copy the actual colours of the sunsets they see. He is now studying paintings that were painted in the 20th century.

So the next time you look at a painting of a beautiful sunset, examine the colours more carefully.

How can scientists predict earthquakes? Earthquakes are not scattered anywhere but happen in certain areas. They happen in places where pieces of the earth’s surface meet. For example, earthquakes often occur on the west-coast of North and South America, around the Mediterranean Sea, and along the Pacific coast of Asia.
Another way to predict earthquakes is to look for changes in the earth’s surface, like a sudden drop of water level in the ground. Some people say animals can predict earthquakes. Before earthquakes people have seen chickens sitting in trees, fish jumping out of the water, snake leaving their holes and other animals acting strangely.
After an earthquake happens, people can die from lack of food, water and medical supplies. The amount of destruction caused by an earthquake depend on types of building, soil conditions and population. Of the 6000 earthquakes on the earth each year, only about fifteen cause great damage and many deaths.
