Very soon she's talking as if she's known the other person for years. I asked her once what her secret was. She said that the most important thing in a conversation was listening. People love to talk about themselves, so if you allow them to do, it's very easy to keep a conversation going. You have to listen very carefully and ask question. And you have to look interested, too. So don't keep looking at other things in the room while you're talking to someone.

Another thing that I've noticed is that she only pays a people compliments. She say: "I like your hair. Which hairdresser do you go to?" or "You look very well. Have you been on holiday?" Friendly messages like this seem to provide an easy way into a conversation.

You can do a few things to make homework less stressful. First, be sure you understand the assignment. Write it down in your notebook or day planner if you need to, and don’t be afraid to ask questions about what is expected. It is much easier to take a minute to ask the teacher during or after class than to struggle to remember later that night! If you want, you can also ask how long the particular homework assignment should take to complete so you can plan your time.
Second, use any extra time you have in school to work on your homework. Many schools have libraries that are specifically designed to allow students to study or get homework done. The more work you can get done in school, the less you will have to do that night.
Third, pace yourself. If you don’t finish your homework during school, think about how much you have left and what else is going on that day, and then plan your time. Most middle students should have between 1 and 3 hours of homework a night. If it is a heavy homework day, you will need to devote more time to homework.

No one is expected to understand everything, and maybe you need some help. The first place to turn for help is your teacher. But what if you don’t feel comfortable with your teacher? If you are in a big enough school, there may be other teachers who teach the same subject. Speak to other teachers directly and you may be in luck. Sometimes it just helps to have someone explain something in a different way. Moreover, you might also be able to get some help from another student. If there is someone you like who is a good student, think about asking that person if you can study together.

28. The most important thing that you should do when you get your assignment may be
________.
A. to know when you hand it in
B. to understand it and its requirements
C. to know how long it takes to complete it
D. to remember it in order to plan the time
29. If you have any free time left at school, you should ________.
A. use it to do your homework in the library
B. spend time with your friends
C. use it to understand the assignment
D. use it to make your day planner
30. When students need some help, they should ________.
A. never ask other teachers for help
B. always turn to their own teachers for help
C. ask any good students at the subject in your school
D. go to their teachers or other teachers teaching the same subject
31. The main idea of the first three paragraphs is ________.
A. to get help when you need it
B. to do homework immediately

C. to create a homework plan

D. to ask your teachers for more explanation

32. According to the passage, all of the following are correct EXCEPT that ________.

Visitors to Vietnam should pay attention to the following advice.

Socializing

Vietnamese people like to ask questions about age, marriage, salary, etc when they meet someone for the first time. For example, they may ask, 'How old are you?', 'Are you married?', 'What do you do for a living?', 'Do you have any children?' Don't be embarrassed by these kinds of questions. This is the Vietnamese way of being friendly.

Presents

Vietnamese people always show their gratitude when receiving a gift. However, you should not be surprised if they do not open a present you had given them immediately. Opening a present in front of the gift-giver is considered to be embarrassing.

Compliments

Although Vietnamese people always appreciate compliments, they are usually modest in their reactions. For example, in response to the compliment 'What a nice dress!' a Vietnamese girl may say, 'I don't think so. It's very old.'

The elderly

Always show the elderly respect. Bowing your head slightly to an elderly person is a sign of respect. During a meal, elderly people should be served first.

13: Which questions do Vietnamese people often ask when they meet someone for the first time?

A. questions about music B. questions about personal life

C. questions about weather D. questions about sports

14: Who should be served first during a meal in Vietnam?

A. the poor people B. the young people

C. the old people D. the rich people

15: Why don't Vietnamese people open presents immediately?

A. Because they feel bored with opening a present.

B. Because they don't like gift-givers.

C. Because they feel embarrassed to open a present in front of the gift-giver.

D. Because they don't like presents.

16: How do Vietnamese people react to compliments?

A. modestly B. happily C. excitedly D. sadly

17: Which of the following is NOT true?

Read the pasage then answer the following questions:

"Don't you hate splitting wood?" asked Charlie, as he sat down on a log to hinder Rob for a while."No, I rather like it. When I get hold of a tough old fellow, I say, 'See here, now, you think you're the stronger, and are going to beat me; so I'll split you up into kindling wood." "Pshaw!" said Charlie, laughing; "and it's only a stick of wood." "Yes; but you see I pretend it's a lesson, or a tough job of any kind, and it's nice to conquer it.""I don't want to conquer such things; I don't care what becomes of them. I wish I were a man, and a rich one." "Well, Charlie, if you live long enough you'll be a man, without wishing for it; and as for the rich part, I mean to be that myself." "You do. How do you expect to get your money? By sawing wood?" "Maybe - some of it; that's as good a way as any, so long as it lasts. I don't care how I get rich, you know, as long as it's in an honest and useful way." "I'd like to sleep over the next ten years, and wake up to find myself a young man with a splendid education and plenty of money." "Humph! I am not sleepy - a night at a time is enough for me.I mean to work the next ten yearsYou see there are things that you've got to work out - you can't sleep them out." "I hate work," said Charlie, "that is, such work as sawing and splitting wood, and doing chores. I'd like to do some big work, like being a clerk in a bank or something of that sort." "Wood has to be sawed and split before it can be burned," said Rob. "I don't know but I'll be a clerk in a bank some time; I'm working towards it. I'm keeping father's accounts for him."How Charlie laughed! "I should think that was a long way from being a bank clerk. I suppose your father sells two tables and six chairs, some days, doesn't he?" "Sometimes more than that, and sometimes not so much," said Rob, in perfect good humor."I didn't say I was a bank clerk now. I said I was working towards it. Am I not nearer it by keeping a little bit of a book than I should be if I didn't keep any book at all?" "Not a whit - such things happen," said Charlie, as he started to go.Now, which of these boys, do you think, grew up to be a rich and useful man, and which of them joined a party oftramps before he was thirty years old?
