Speaker 1: We all know what it’s like to argue with our family. It’s just part of life, isn’t it? Well, not necessarily. Sometimes, family arguments can become a habit ... a habit that is harmful and upsetting for the people involved. Our three-week course will teach you some simple tricks and techniques for breaking that habit. Do the course on your own or better still, persuade other members of your family to come along with you.

Speaker 2: When I was younger, I had a lot of arguments with my parents ... and with my sister too. I won a few of them, but mostly I lost. Then I realised what I was doing wrong: I wasn’t preparing for the arguments. So I started treating them more like exams. I actually started revising for my family arguments! I prepared all my reasons, my examples. You really should take the same approach – it works like magic! Now I hardly ever lose an argument at home.

Speaker 3: Hi, Poppy, it’s me. Look, this family meal is on Sunday ... that’s this Sunday. Mum and Dad will be there, and so will Grandad. I’m not sure about Uncle John. But then, we’ve never been sure about Uncle John. Anyway, I really need to know that you’re going to be there. Without you, it might be a disaster. You know how Grandad always tries to start an argument when we’re out. He’s much better when you’re there. So give me a call and tell me you’re coming. Please!

Speaker 4: I left home when I was seventeen after an argument with my parents, and to be honest, it was the best thing that happened to me. I had to grow up quickly! At nineteen, I started my own business. Now I live in a £5-million penthouse in London and run a business with more than a thousand employees. That family argument gave me the push I needed. Of course, I’ve got a lot of talent too!

II. Read the passage and choose the best answer to each of the following questions.

four great reasons for high school students to volunteer

Volunteer work presents a great opportunity for teenagers to prepare for the future, as well as to improve their communities. In addition to boosting socializing skills and awareness of local organizations and social issues, high school students who volunteer often may have an advantage over their peers when headed off to college.

1. Gaining New Skills

With each new volunteer activity, students gain new skills. The skills seem to be basic or trivial at the time of training, but may provide fundamental grounds for future success. For example, For example, by managing the receipt, sorting and distributing the donations from community, school students might learn how to use spreadsheets to keep track of inventory. These skills are a great foundation for a job in management, accounting, or running a small business.

2. Giving Time

One of the most charitable acts anyone can do is donate their time and talents. Students who are busy with after-school sports or work to help support their families and still make time to volunteer on evenings or weekends show their outstanding character and resolve to make a difference. High school students may help to mentor younger ones or to assist with one-time special events held on weekends.

3. Showing Responsibility

Just like going to a job, committing to a volunteer position shows a student's responsibility. High school students should get involved in volunteer programs relating to their hobbies in order to naturally build responsibility. For example, those who love to read can find volunteer opportunities with a local library and those who enjoy sports can coach athletics at an after-school program for children.

4. Adding to the Resume

If a high school student's pre-college resume is limited to summer employment at a local restaurant or a cafe. it might be time to add a few lines. Commitment to community volunteer work over a long time shows that a student is willing to work for something without monetary compensation, including a college internship or apprenticeship, which may be a requirement of college programs.

A. The programs are related to their future jobs

B. The programs are related to their interests

6. What volunteer work may be suitable for a student who likes sports?

8. What may be a requirement of college programs for their future students?

USAID IN Vietnam

Assisting persons with disabilities has long been one of the top priorities for the U.S. Government in Vietnam. Since 1989, with the establishment of the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Leahy War Victims Fund (LWVF), USAID is working to increase the availability of and access to a wide variety of programs benefiting people with disabilities in conflict-affected countries.

In Vietnam, U. S. assistance has helped address medical needs and support the inclusion of Vietnamese with disabilities into all aspects of society. The U.S. Government has contributed more than $80 million in assistance to persons with disabilities, has improved the lives of more than 30,000 persons with disabilities, and has strengthened the Government of Vietnam’s capacity to provide high quality services to those in need. USAID has provided rehabilitation services for tens of thousands of persons with disabilities, education and vocational training including information technology, job placement, supporting parent associations to expand the advocacy for disability issues, and support for the development of legal codes to improve physical accessibility for persons with disabilities in public buildings.

USAID'S work supporting persons with disabilities is also viewed by many as contributing to successful US-Vietnam cooperation to overcome the painful past shared by the two countries. Program activities work in three areas: policy advocacy and coordination, direct assistance including occupational and physical therapy and providing assistive devices, and health systems strengthening, to provide quality disabilities-related care and treatment. Persons with disabilities have been more readily integrated into society by improving their access to health, education and social services. USAID programs support local governments in implementing the national disability law and the U.N. Convention on the rights of Persons with disabilities, and influencing public policies that affect the lives of persons with disabilities.

1. USAID was established in 1989 _____

2. USAID aims to make various programs benefiting all people in conflict-affected countries ___________

3. Addressing medical needs of Vietnamese people is the priority of U.S assistance in Vietnam ___________

4. American government has made an $80 million contribution to help disabled people in Vietnam __________

5. Thanks to USAID, more high quality services are provided to disabled people in Vietnam __________

6. USAID has helped to rehabilitate only a limited number of persons with disabilities in Vietnam __________

7. USAID work makes a great contribution to the success of US-Vietnam cooperation ___________

8. The main focus of USAID activities is providing direct assistance with occupation replacement and health treatment for the disabled. ___________

9. Having better access to health, education and social services, the disabled in Vietnam have become more integrated into society ___________

10. Thanks to USAID programs, the Vietnam's national disability law and the U.N. Convention on the Rights of persons with disabilities have been enforced ___________

I Today in the studio we have well-known psychologist and business expert, Lisa Williams. She’s going to tell us why so many young people are creating their own businesses. Welcome to the show, Lisa.

Thanks, Todd.

Lately, we’ve been hearing about younger and younger people creating their own businesses. And these are not just little, part-time businesses. They’re very successful companies which sometimes become global brands. That’s what I really don’t understand. How can a very young person, with little understanding of how business works and not much knowledge of money, come up with a good idea for a business?

Well first of all, the question isn’t how it’s possible, but why it doesn’t happen more often. You see, young people are ideal candidates to come up with business ideas that no one else has thought of. They’re also the perfect people to turn these ideas into reality.

I Really? But they haven’t got any business experience.

OK, you’re falling into the trap that most people fall into. You assume that it takes a lot of experience and a business education to create a new business. But in my experience of working with young entrepreneurs, exactly the opposite is true. Young people don’t have a lot of business knowledge, but this can sometimes be an advantage. In fact, too much business education and experience often makes it harder to think creatively. This is because you’ve been told again and again what the so-called ‘right’ answers are, so you’re not able to look at all the other options.

So you’re talking about creative thinking ... thinking ‘outside the box’?

That’s a saying that we all hear too often ... but yes, that’s exactly what I’m talking about. If you don’t already have a set of ‘right’ answers to various problems, you are free to think of options that no one else would think of.

I Vậy sao?

Dear Liu!

Last time I told you that I had been thinking about pursuing higher education in the UK. I got started to learn the process of applying for a university in London some time ago. Now I have some questions for you.

First, what is the procedure for applying for a student visa? Of course. I have to submit an application but what other documents are required? How long does it take me to obtain my student visa? It is important to plan time to wait for visa processing because the time between finding out I have been accepted to go and leaving may be very close together. Second, do 1 have to present my financial documents; for example proof of funds, to prove that I am able to pay for my education? And last, do I need to obtain the International Certificate of Vaccination? Is it required that I have certain vaccinations before I go? What are they? After all. can you make me a checklist: what I should bring and what I should leave at home?

I wish you and your family the best. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Dear Peter

I received your email last week, in which you asked me about my city Ha Noi in 2050. There are different ideas about this question. I thought about it in a few days, and now I can give you two predictions.

Let's take a look at optimis aspects. In 2050 Ha Noi will become a more liveable city for lots of reasons. The city authorities have built a very careful plan to promote advanced technology to make greener motorbikes to deal with air pollution. In addition, the city dwellers are encouraged to make use of public transport system to reduce traffic jam. The government will also grow more trees and encourage people to use solar panels.

On the contrary, pessimis people think that the city life will be a dangerous place to live in because the government cannot control the use of private cars and motorbikes. Besides, they don’t believe that citizens will use public transports because this system in our city are aging and not upgraded regularly. It also take time to find a bus and go to the destination in spite of very short distance. People's life will also continue to be threatened because of pollution such as air pollution by burning fossil fuels, emission from cars and motorbikes, noise pollution from constructing buildings and sounding of transportations. The effects of global warming have great impacts on the city dwellers, higher temperature in the summer and colder climate in te winter.

That's all about my answer to your question. I hope you will be satisfied with it, Peter.

Best wishes,

Nga
