Choose the word or phrase )A B C D) that best fits the blank space in the following passage
In Part Three of FCE Speaking you work together with a partner. You have to do a (1)..SINGLE.. task which usually (2)..LASTS... about three minutes. Once possible task is problem (3)..SOLVING...., which means you have to look at some (4)...VISUAL .. information and then (5)...DISCUSS. the problem with your partner. You may be shown photos, drawing, diagrams, maps, plans, advertisements or computer graphics and it is (6)..ESSENTIAL... that you study them carefully. If necessary, check you know exactly what to do by (7)...POLITELY.. asking the examiner to (8)...REPEAT .... the instructions or make them cleaner
While you are doing the task, the examiner will probably say very (9)...LITTLE... and you should ask your partner questions and make (10)..SUGGESTIONS.... if he or she is not saying much. If either of you have any real difficulties the examiner may decide to stel in and (11).....HELP... Normally, however, you will find plenty to say, which helps the (12).....ASSESSOR.... to give you a fair mark. This mark depends on your successin doing the task by (13)....COMPETING... with your partner, which includes taking (14)..TURNS... in giving opinions and replying appropriately, although in the end it may be possible to agree or (15)...DISAGREE..
Sometimes you just know things about people the first time you see them- for example that you want to be friends with them or that you don't trust them. But perhaps this kind of intuition isn't as hard to explain (1)as it may seem. For instance, everybody gives out body language signals (2)at the time. The (3)way you hold your body, head and arms tells people about your mood. If you hold your arms tightly at your sides (4)then fold them across your chest, people wil generally feel that you (5)are being defensive. Holding your head on one side shows interest in the (6)strange person, while (7)you relaxed, "open" posture indicates that you are self- confident. All this affects (8)on we feel about someone
Also, a stranger may (9)recognize you of a previous meeting with someone. This may be because of (10)someone as simple as the fact that he or she is physically similar (11)from someone who treated you well or badly. But your reaction doesn't (12)reflect to be the result of the memory of a person you previously met- your feeling about the stranger could (13)be influenced by a smell in the air that brings to mind a place (14)where you were happy as a child. Since even a single word can bring back a memory (15)but as that, you may never realize it is happening
Fill each of the numbered blanks in the following passages. Use only ONE word for each space
Many people dream of (1)..living... in a foreign country. It can be an amazing experience (2)...for.... those who have the courage to leave their family and friends and settle down in a new place. (3)....however..., there's one potential problem you should be aware of: culture shock. Culture shock is the feeling we get from living in a place that is so different to where we grew up that we are not sure (4)...how.... to deal with it. Societies are organized in many different ways, and we can often (5)...be... taken aback by some of the things we find in foreign countries. Customs and traditions can be very different and that can sometimes make (6).it..... difficult to get on with local people and to make friends. They migt not approve of things you do or might object to things you say. You might even be banned from doing things in another country that are perfectly legal in your own. (7)...if... you were to move to a country such as Singapore, say, you might find some of the laws very (8)...quickly.. There, people can be forced to pay a large fine just for dropping litter. Eventually, (9)..though..., most people who live abroad fall in love with their adopted country and learn to accept its differences. It does take real courage to make such a big change (10)...in.. your life, but many people agree that it is worth it in the end
I have Learned, often the hard way, that there are a few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and after your journey. First of All, always check and double-check departure times. It is amazing how few people really do this carefully. Once i arrived at the airport a few minutes after ten. My secretary had got the ticket for me and i thought she said that the plane left at 10:50. I walked calmly to the departure desk, thinking I still had a little time to spare. I didn`t bother to take a good look at the ticket. The clerk at the desk told me politely but firmly that the departure time was 10:15 and that the flight was, according to international regulations, " now closed! ". I had to wait three hours for the next one and missed an important meeting.
The second rule is to remember that even in this age of credit cards, it is still important to have at least a little of the local currency with you when you arrive in a country. This can be absolutely essential if you are flying to a place few tourists normally visit. A few years ago, I took a business trip to Oklahoma. I flew there from London via Dallas, with very little time to change planes in between. I arrived there at midnight and the bank at the airport was closed. The only way to get to my hotel was by taxi and since I had no Dollars, i offered to pay in Pounds instead." Listen, Buddy! I only take Real money! " the driver said angrily. Luckily I was able to borrow a few dollars from a clerk at the hotel, but it was Embarrassing.
The third and last rule is to find out as much as you can about the weather at your destination before you leave, especially if you can take only a little baggage with you. I feel sorry for some of my colleagues who travel in heavy suits and raincoats in May, when it is still fairly cool in London or Manchester, to places like Athens, Rome or Madrid, where it is already beginning to get quite warm during a day. Few people understand just how important it is to have the right sort of clothes with you in these days of rapid air travel.

Let's assume that choosing your holiday was trouble-free. A rash assumption, I admit, for I know about the hearthside arguments that brochures can(1) spark off. However, I must confine myself(2) to the things that could go wrong once you set(3) out on your travels or after you arrive at your destination(4).
Although (5) I claim no qualification as (6) an adviser, I do have under my belt practical experience which has been acquired (7) over twenty years of globetrotting. First, some basic ground rules that apply(8) in all situations. If something does go wrong, then bear in mind(9) that you are not the first person to have had (10) something lost or stolen or to have been involved (11) in accidents or illness. The people to whom (12) you go for help are familiar(13) with the proper way of doing things and you can best help by keeping as calm (14) as possible and providing(15) them with the information they need. Needless(16) to say, you should be adequately insured and carry evidence (17) of that insurance. Anyone(18) who travels abroad without proper cover deserves(19) little sympathy in the event(20) of trouble.
